What are the pros and cons of a raw food diet?!

Question: Pros - you are eating as close to the garden as possible. The foods will have their natural enzymes, phytonutrients, minerals and vitamins. That is the best you can give your body.

Cons - raw meats are dangerous because of the bacteria, parasites and other nasties in them. I'd go vegan if you are going to do raw.

In it's simplicity...

Pro
You gain the maximum amount of nutrition, vitamins, antioxidants, etc since heat damages them.

Con
Elevated risk of contracting an infection, especially with raw meat.

In my opinion. Including raw foods, such as fruits and vegetables, into your existing diet is a great idea and should be encouraged. Restricting yourself to a pure raw diet is a bit too much and may be difficult to follow. Find your balance of a healthy well balanced diet and stick with that.

Most of the raw foodist I've met in North America are fine for the first couple of winters, until they drop any excess weight they may have started the raw food regime with. I've observed that as they continue the raw foods diet into the second, third and fourth years, they start to a) become unable to keep warm in the winter, b) some of the women lose so much weight that they stop menstruating, c) some people's sexual energy completely disappears, d) After about 7 years, when folks' natural supply of Vitamin B-12 runs out, I start observing people craving things like scrambled eggs, fried chicken, meatloaf and mashed potatoes, steak, fish, that kind of thing. I do believe and observe that raw foods diets are great for people w/ lots of "build-up" or excess weight, and those whose body needs a good cleaning out. I have also observed that folks who get too rigid in their philosophical reasons for doing the diet and try to continue living where there's a winter, a) can rarely stick with the diet longer than a couple of winters without making themselves really, really ill or just kinda naturally listening to their bodies and changing what they're doing without really thinking about it. A raw foods diet is MUCH easier to incorporate into one's life is one is living in very warm climates, where fresh produce abounds, and where one does not have to bother oneself about keeping warm in the winter. Raw foods diets are cooling, almost without exception, and cause breakdown and excretion in the body. They are WONDERFUL for clearing the skin, lungs, liver, intestines and sometimes kidneys, getting rid of allergies and toxins and excess in the body and for flooding each and every single cell with optimal nutrition and nutrients. This diet, however, is notoriously awful for people long term. It is good as a healing diet. It is not good as a long term way of life, or as a permanent choice, nor IMHO is ANY diet that is too restrictive. While we're on the subject, raw foods and juices are WONDERFUL for increasing the level of enzymes in the body as well.
