Sleep inducing herb?!

Question: My mother narrated me this story: When she was young (maybe '50s) her parents went to a market at the Greek city of Volos (central Greece) and bought a herb that had a very strong sleep inducing ability. At these days Greece was a rural and poor country and there were no sleep pills.
What herb was it?

Are you farmiliar with the term 'marijuana' ?

Valerian

Most likely camphomile

drink honey with warm water w'd do.

Possibly Valarian.

Sounds like Valerian root. You can get it from GNC or somewhere like that.

k first off valerian dosent work on 99% of guys it works through estrogen

and it was definetly chamomile because it works with everyone mix some chamomile with some boiling water, let it steep for 15 minutes and take a couple sips but becarful because it is strong stuff, first time i drank any i took two sips then fell asleep and woke up with burns on my chest.

good luck

I would think it was probably either hops (which should not be used) or valerian, possibly chamomile. There are shedloads of herbs which do this.

Just saw the answer above. Valerian is not oestrogenic. It works because the isovalerianic acid in it is similar in structure to GABA, the main neurotransmitter in the sympathetic nervous system, which is the side of the nervous system which encourages sleep, and it also contains valepotriates, which synergise sedatives generally. However, herbs cannot be analysed in this way to understand them properly.

Chamomile is a fantastic herb, but tolerance builds up quite easily, so its more useful for other purposes than helping sleep.

Valerian is a top choice.
But another would be catnip. This comon herb will help one to sleep, as well as calming the stomach.
