Question about taking Flax seed oil and fish oil gel tablets?!

Question: I have been taking my regular vitamin, flax seed oil, fish oil together now for about a week. The only thing new in my diet and vitamins is the fish oil. I have been having some abrupt bowel movements and terrible gas. Does anyone know if this will pass or should i give up and stop taking the fish oil??

Well, if you are having indigestion like that, it's very likely that you either don't have enough of the appropriate enzymes in your stomach to digest one of the new additions to your regiment or you're allergic to one of the ingredients. Unfortunately, either fish oil or vitamins could be the cause, technically. Also (in regards to the other answerer), it's very seldom (if ever, aside from a reaction to the ingredient itself) that adding Omega-3 fatty acids to your diet when you already have a source of them will cause a reaction like this.

I would suggest stop taking the fish oil to start with, but if the gas and BMs don't let up within a week, stop taking the vitamin pill. Or, if you want a guarantee of relief from the gas/BMs, stop taking both right now... then once you are "back to normal", add one of them back into your regiment for a week. If you get gas/BMs like that again, that is the culprit.
It's always tough to weed out which ingredient is giving a bad reaction when you take more than one new product at a time, but that's the only way to narrow it down short of seeing a doctor that knows a lot about allergies and indigestion ;-)
Good luck!

your body is getting used to/rid of the oil- it will pass in time. Although you're getting EFA's from both fish and flax- so you may be over doing it a bit... though i'd doubt it.

It is probably your might over doing it a tad. Because if you think about you are putting a lot of oils in your body. I personally found fish oils to have more beneficial. If your taking omega 3,6,and 9 then there is really no need to take flax. But most likely your overloading yourself. I'd recommend maybe try other supplements to maintain your health like Isotnix OPC-3 (antioxidant) or Isotonix Multitech (multivitamin). These are great supplements to take because the have a high delivery system so your body absorbs about 95% of the ingredients when they are taken correctly. You can research them yourself or ask someone who would know more. The link below you can do both. It has a wealth of information and has a customer manager that can give you in depth details of each supplement.

Ok, First I would recommend a vitamin. Nature's Way Alive! multivitamins, they are one off the best on the market. They have everything you need, including green foods, fruits and veggies, digestive enzymes, amino acids, essential fatty acids, and herbs. Most all of the vitamins on the market are very deficient in what we need and have added preservatives, rendering them virtually useless. Both the fish oil and flax seed oil are good for you. If you can't tolerate one or the other in that form you could try a combination of fish, flax and borage oil or just simply eat fish 2-3 times a week and sprinkle flax seeds or meal in a salad. Digestive upset may occur if the fish oil is not enteric coated so you might want to switch to one that is. I would certainly not give up on taking it as it has a great many health benefits, just try a different form of it, maybe even a different brand. Vitacost.com is a great site, good prices and customer service.

Terrible gas from fish oil is quite normal so what you need is odourless fish oil capsules for a higher price.

You could actually dispense with the flax oil because the omega 3 in flax oil is ALA which has some heart benefits but no brain benefits. Only about 5 to 10% of ALA is metabolised to DHA which has some brain benefits.. The omega 3 in soyabeans, soy products and walnuts is also ALA which has no brain benefits.

Fish oil contains the omega 3s EPA and DHA and both of these have some heart benefits and DHA also has some brain benefits.

So if you want brain benefits you need fish oil.

It is better to take Fish oil rather than Flax seed oil.It has more benefits for your overall health.
