Is a male nurse considered alternative medicine???!

Question: I feel the need to provide a service to my community and would like to enter the health care industry, at the age of 35.
I like the idea of becoming an RN.
Any input would be apreciated.

As a male nurse, I see absolutely nothing wrong with serving the community and my neighbors. One other thing, in case it concerns you, Male nurses can and do work in every field in healthcare. And for those with the quick comments about homosexuality, I know far more women that are than men in the nursing field so please let that perception die.
This can be one of the most satisfying career changes you have ever made. The pay is good, the hours great, the benefits unbeatable. You always go home feeling today, you made a difference in someone's life.

Go for it.

no...alternative meds is acupuncture, herbal meds, chiropractors, massage...

male nurses are just male nurses..

Go to your local Emergency Room or Level one trauma center and you will see that Men have come into the Nursing field in this day and age just have women have entered every other market. It is actually very even...

why would a nurse who is qualified regardless of gender be considered alternative medicine? there is no historic or societal reason that nurses have to be female.

Depends on how good you'll become in your quest to call yourself ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE.

rock it! nurses are so in demand!! gender is not really relevant. & check out that movie....meet the parents....ben stiller plays a male nurse and defends his gender/profession adorably. i think it;s extremely common nowadays.though it;s definately not considered alternative medicine...thats pretty funny....unless you want to be a male nurse in a acupuncture/herbalist clinic.

if you have the heart to serve then go for it...
age doesn't matter

why not?! how will you know if you are made for a specific field if you never try it.

It makes no sense to me why you asked this question the way you did. To me, it's like saying, 'Hey, I'm a girl. You think it'd be okay for me to be a pilot?' It's like sexism is in complete reverse in here... :)

It's actually very smart that you would choose a career that is rising faster than any career out there. All the baby boomers are about to get old and rickety and nurses are going to be a very valued asset for hospitals, hospices, nursing homes, assisted living, home-care, physical therapy clinics, etc... oh the list will go on...

An RN program would be like starting college again and you are definitely in your young years and can accomplish that. It will probably take about 4 years if you have no training or education in the field. Federal financial aid will cover some of it, probably not all of it. If you're lucky enough to work fo ra company that reimburses for ANY classes, then take advantage of that.

I know 3 people who are nurses, and honestly, they were done with it. They all mentioned that watching people pass away really hit them hard at times and caused depression. So, if i were you, I might try to find a nursing position in a place that wouldn't necessarily have a lot of death around. that's just me.

Good luck to you!!!

I'm trying to become a nurse too and I am a year older than you. I been a medic for over 10 years. It is not strange or unusual to start training at our age. But being a male nurse is not considered alternative medicine. But beware, nursing school is no joke. It is as intensive as med school. Be prepared to think critically...hopefully you will find out when you start your nursing classes! Good Luck to you!

A Male Nurse is not Medicine.. Medicine is something you take. A Male Nurse is often a Nurse Practitioner! Anyone can be a nurse.. a nurse administers medicine but isn't the medicine! If you want to be an RN that's not alternative medicine that's in the coventional!
Now if you became a Natural Path P or a Herbalist or Reflexologist then that be what's considered Altenative medicine!

Congratulations on your choice!!! There's always plenty of room for more nurses. Can't get enough. And there's lots of different venues for nurses, so you won't have a hard time finding work, and you will be paid well for your services.

If your heart is guiding you to this, you will be wonderful nurse. And at your age you will be focused on your studies without the 'social time' conflict that many young nursing students experience.

As I'm sure you are aware of, there's lots of males in the nursing profession. In fact, I like male nurses for the simple fact that most are stronger than women and don't hurt their bodies as much as a result. Nursing is a physically demanding profession.

There's room for both male and female in nursing. Just like there's room for both in doctors. I believe the stereotype is long gone. Men have been nursing people all down through the ages. And now culturally we are more equitably spread out throughout most professions. This is another proof that peace prevails more than not on this planet.

I did get a hoot out of how you phrased your Q tho. It made me snort with laughter. .....alternative medicine.... lol.
2pts and take my pulse, please. :)

A male nurse is like any other nurse (although they won't make you wear a skirt, unless that's what you want) in that you will work with medical doctors in a hospital setting. So you will be part of standard medicine.
Best luck. I'm sure you will be of much service to your community. Sometimes the nurses have a far better idea of what is going on with the patients than the Doctors themselves (Uh, Doctor, don't you mean three miligrams, not three grams of that medicine?)
