What are probiotics for?!

Question: those in pharmacies in tablet form.

Answers: those in pharmacies in tablet form.

Probiotic means "For Life" .. This is a general term for micro-organisms known as friendly bacteria, which support the body's own defences against infection and disease. There are billions of friendly bacteria in our bodies, and they do some wonderful things, such as aid in digestion, improve immune system functioning, help keep hormone levels normal, protect against overgrowth infection from fungi and yeasts (which may be absorbed into the bloodstream and contribute to other serious diseases), manufacture some B complex vitamins and more.

You can increase your good bacteria levels by adding more fibre to your diet (intestinal bacteria consume dietary fibre and metabolize it into acids that inhibit the growth of bad bacteria) and eating yoghurt - preferably nonfat or low-fat - made with live, active cultures. (Dairy-free products are also available.)

You may experience gas or bloating when you first start taking probiotics. This is an indication that the good bacteria are fermenting and the problem should disappear in a week or so when your body adjusts to the change.

intestinal health -think yogurt. they're good for you and expensive.

To treat/prevent yeast infections (anywhere in the body) and to restore good bacteria within your body.

When you take antibiotics, it can also kill the good bacteria in your body...the bacteria that can help fight illnesses.

In my opinion, you don't need the tablets. All you need to do is eat yogurt with live cultures to help the above.

apparently they aren't as effective as those found naturally in foods such as bananas and spinach, name a couple. They occur in many foods and they are meant to restore balance to gut flora but you're better off eating the foods that contain them for obvious reasons.
The companies that make these are charging a lot of money for something that you should get in your diet if you eat good food.

Probiotics replenish the good bacteria in your digestive tract, helping maintain the necessary balance to properly process nutrients and maintain health. A good probiotic combined with a complete enzyme will help your body get more out of your food and keep things like bacterial and yeast infections at bay. Our foods used to have most of that we needed, but we eat mostly a dead diet now, so need to supplement. Fermented foods will also help, like kefir, sauerkraut, etc.

You should also take probiotics anytime you are on antibiotics since antibiotics are not discriminatory and will kill good as well as bad bacteria, leaving you unbalanced.

A good place to find them inexpensively - and that same ones sold at your health food stores - is http://www.iherb.com (not affiliated, just who I use)

We eat as close to the garden as possible, and organic, but added probiotics and enzymes and noticed marked digestive improvement.
