Help for diabetic trying to control his weight?!

Question: I just came back from visiting my brother for the holidays. He has been off of his insulin for 3 months and has not altered his eating habits at all. He gained over 50 lbs while under a "doctors: care, when he was put on insulin, even though he was power walking 3 miles a day. repeated visits onloy cranked up the bill, no one was able to adjust the insulin to a correct dosage. He quit excersining. What can my brother do to stabilize his weight? What are the foods he should stay away from? I noticed after he ate any kind of pasta or bread he became exhausted. Is there any alternative to the insulin, because it never seemed to help and now between the 2 sickly adults in the family they shelled out over 15,000$ in co-pays. Thanks for any tips you can offer.

Forget the 3 meals a day thing. Try eating 5-6 times daily at scheduled intervals about 3 hours aprart. Small meals will help to keep glycemic load small and eating often will help to keep metablism "revved up". A reasonable serving of nuts will help to keep blood sugar levels stable and also be satisfying. Simple carbs and sugar cause the blood sugar level to spike and cause a tired "lull" soon after. Stick to whole grain, complex carbs, protein, and healthy fats (nuts). Chicken or fish is a great choice. Eat as many vegetables as he wants. Fruit is good too, but in small amounts due to sugar content. The larger the meal, the higher the glycemic load, so the higher the blood glucose spike. So again, stick to smaller meals every few hours (this also helps to curb any cravings and binge eating). And 20-30 minutes of walking every day will do wonders for glycemic control (on a treadmill incline is great). Hope this helps.

Cinnamin, Blueberry, and Mullberry pills are a good way to start and can be found in good health food stores.

Maybe he has a allergic reaction to bread. I am allergic to whole wheat. Find gluten free bread. That could help.
