Alternative Methods For Treating Hypothyroidism?!

Question: Since my medication is basically a hormone replacement pill, which changes every time blood work is drawn, are there any alternative methods or supplements to help?

Exercise is the best
Black Cohosh is especially good for treating menstrual problems associated with hypothyroidism. It's a popular treatment for menopausal women.
Kelp is also good.
switch to celtic salt or a sea salt that states it contains iodine.
enzymes
zinc, selenium and vitamin E also good.

Not really that am aware.
exercise has shown promise to improve hypothyroid states.
(Aerobic).

Thyroid medication is synthetic duplication of the hormone (thyroxine) that your thyroid gland is not able to manufacture in the required amounts.

I don't know what you mean by "it changes every time blood work is drawn" We don't usually measure the actual thyroxine in your blood, we measure TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) which is produced by the pituitary and tells the thyroid how much thyroxine to make. There is a feedback loop between the thyroid and the pituitary.

So, when TSH levels are low...it means you have enough thyroxine , and when TSH is high, you don't have enough. There is a normal range and it will naturally fluctuate all the time, so the TSH numbers wont' be exactly the same each time they are checked.

Also, it usually takes about 6 weeks for the TSH to restabilize after a dose adjustment. Once stable, I only have people check it once or twice a year as long as they are feeling fine.

And no, there are no alternative treatments. Some people prefer to use thyroxine extracted from pigs....I have no idea why they think that is more "natural" than synthetically identical human thyroxine.

Im looking too . I was tolded by my doctor that if your levels {tsh} are staying normal you only should have your blood work done once a year.I was (hyper) till i was so run down and calcium was to much in my body , so i had to have my thyroid & parathyroid glands took out. im on meds the rest of my life and now im gaining weight. Doctors say once your thyroid is out you are hypothyroid. If your levels change your doages will change and you will always be on meds.

Enzymatic Therapy makes a product called Metabolic Advantage. It's a natural and safe thyroid support product. Get it at vitacost.com for the best price.

Your dosage could be constantly changing because you are testing at different times of the day. A TSH should always be done first thing in the morning only. This is because TSH changes throughout the day, being lowest in the afternoon.

I'm not sure what medication you are on, but if you want there is a natural alternative called armour thyroid. It contains both T4 and T3, so many people feel better on it. It is adjusted by free t4 and free t3, not by TSH.
