Flaxseed Oil? Worth it?!

Question: I recently bought some flaxseed oil in capsules because I heard they were miracles at cancer prevention.

They are giving me BAD diarhea (like 5 times a day) and making me feel very nauseous before bed (when I take them).

you can imagine my confusion at first, I had no idea these were side effects of flaxseed oil so I thought I was coming down with a flu!

should I stop taking these pills or will the side effects go away? When is the best time to take them so they DONT cause me to poop out my small intestines?

You've gotten some good info here that I won't bother to repeat it all. But, I will add that we use flax, but in seed form. It is best fresh, which the oil doesn't stay for long. The seeds will keep for a good long time as long as they aren't ground yet. We bought a cheap electric coffee grinder, and we grind our flax seed when we are ready to use it so it is freshest. That way we get ALL the parts of the flax seed, not just the oil. A naturopath told me about flax 10 years ago; she was actually taking it for estrogen replacement. I learned more about it, and its benefits. Now we add it to muffins, breads, cereals, and shakes. The seed has a great nutty flavor. You can also take it how she did - 1 tbsp ground and mixed in a glass of water. Drink it in the morning daily.

Warning when using flax seed - make sure your water intake is sufficient and do not take if you have a colon blockage. It is super fiber and will clean you out if you aren't used to fiber. But, that is good and your body will adjust. You should be doing high fiber anyway. If you haven't been, you might want to start slowly with the flax seed.

Another good source for your Omegas is fish oil. Make sure you check that any fish oil is tested to be metal free though.

STOP taking them.

although they may have some benifits, youre better off at having flaxseed oil or flaxseeds in normal food, NOT in a pill.

and besides, its been known to only go against SOME types of cancer. flaxseeds in high doses has actually been linked to causing breast cancer.

Try essential fatty acids instead and take maybe one capsule a day. You dont; need to take as much as the bottle says.
The flax and omega are more for brain function and healthy skin.
There are better things for cancer prevention.
Like Co Q10 and antioxidents and eating good fresh foods instead of junk foods.

It sounds like you are trying to detox to fast. Flax is great, but is part of an overall health program. Flax oil is costly and goes rancid easily, so I prefer the seeds.

You can get the fatty acids a combination of from Flax seeds, sunflower seed and sesame seeds, they can be ground or whole, and added to foods. The flax will improve bowel function and health.

Yes it is extremely worth it, your questions are far more complex than you realize. Omega 3-6-9 oils have proven results in both cancer prevention and treatment.
Dr. Udo Erasmus wrote a book called "Fats that Heal, Fats that Kill' and is probably the foremost authority on fats in the world. He chose the Flora company for it superb manufacturing processes and high quality standards to produce his line of products. His perfected oil blend helps to prevent the side effects of imbalanced oil products. The imbalance in these products can cause nausea and diarrhea.
There is also a way to get the benefits of Omega oils without taking the flax oil. Fish oil is also available with the same benefits. To stay with the same quality and integrity of processing and quality of product I recommend the products from Nordic Naturals.
After years in the health food business I have learned and am convinced that of equal importance to any alternative medicine products success is not only the type of product but the integrity and diligence of the manufacturers of those products. I have given you some links to information and companies that offer outstanding quality products. I hope this helps you.

Take odourless fish oil capsules instead. They contain the omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA and whilst both of them have some heart benefits only DHA has brain benefits.

The omega 3s in flax seed products, soy products and walnuts are ALA which does have some heart benefits but no brain benefits. Only about 5 to 10 % of ALA is metabolised to DHA.

If you want brain benefits then you need fish oil and not omega 3 from vegetable sources such as flax seed products.

You might want to take the seeds. They are very easy to take you can sprinkle them over your food. Try the seeds and see how they work out for you.
