Chicken Soup?!

Question: I have always wanted to know, does Chicken Soup actually have some ingredient that makes you feel better, as mom always said for a cold, some hot Chicken Soup helps. Or as I suspect is it just a comfort food and you feel better as it tastes so good? Thanks I have always bene curious if this age old cure is actually a cure?

They have done studies and found a component in chicken that does help. Unfortunately, I didn't save any of the references to those studies. Also, when the chicken is made into a soup, beneficial herbs such as ginger, thyme, sage and others are added. Then you get an even more potent health improving formula.

It is more than just a comfort food. I make it for my kids and friends whenever anyone says they are sick. Good stuff, and good for you.

It actually does have "some stuff" that actually makes you feel better. In my nutrition class it was discussed. I believe it is actually the sodium and maybe electrolytes of some sort that do the trick. I do not know about the electrolytes but the sodium definitely plays a crucial role in the healing process.

I don't come from a "chicken soup" background. I have found the Chinese hot and sour soup is the best "remedy" for me. It has some vinegar in it and seems to have a one-up on just plain chicken.

if you add cilantro to it, that helps.
Cilantro is actually a natural antibiotic

chicken soup blocks neutrophils-infammatory cells that trigger coughs and congestion. It works better if you add a slice of garlic and some onion -for the quercetin and spices.
