I just want to reach out and give you a hug. You probably need one right now. Bi-Polar ??? The person who told you that you were Bi-Polar was a doctor, right ??? There should be a Mental Health Organisation around you, that will help you deal with this problem and give you medicine that is cheaper than a regular pharmacy. I've never known a thrift store to sell such medication. But for you, what I want you to do, is firstly go the nearest that you can, Mental Health Clinic/Organisation and tell them of your plight. Then if they can't help you at all, go to the government agency that handles government support/money and tell them of your plight, they may give you what we have in Australia called a "Health Care Card" which entitles the card holder to cheaper medicine, as the Australain Government pick up the tab for the rest. You know, something along those lines, maybe you have where you are at the moment, and just don't know about it. Failing that, go back to your doctor who orginally diagnosed with Bi-Polar and explain you can't afford much in the way of medication can he send you somewhere for this cut price medication. Lots of luck and just know I am a email click away, as I have Panic Disorder and know what it's like to have to buy medication. Let alone of the panic I have to deal with everyday. So I"m in there with you slugger, my email is available if you click on my avatar, there is 2 email addresses, feel free if you need to and I will talk with you further about your situation. Good Luck. L.

No, they are all Rx. But if you qualify for Medicaid then you may be able to get them. Check with the local health dept.

i'm not bipolar or anything, i just wouldn't recommend anti-depressants or ever took any. i just know that they can further increase negative thoughts and suicidal ones too. I believe the best person to turn to is yourself... meaning no psychiatrists or psychologists cuz i went to one when i used to be depressed and it didn't help me at all. it just made me feel worse.

Talk to yourself as in tellyourself whats bothering you and just always remain positive that everything will be ok. I noticed this in myself and I've been better ever since.

If you would like to talk to me further, feel free to contact me.

Out of curiosity, what medication are they trying to get you to take, Valproic acid?? Lithium, while it has a lot of side effects, is usually first line for bipolar disorder and since it's been around for a long time, many formulations are pretty cheap.

St. John's Wort, 5Htp, Vit B complex - you may want to check into those and read about them.

Anti-depressants and bi-polar is not my specialty, but I gave you a star so maybe my Alt Med friends will notice and come help.

Have you tried visiting a naturopath about your problem. They can design a treatment plan specifically geared to you and your symptoms.

Best to you. Hope the star helps get some traffic here and some good help.

5-HTP is the most effective natural one I know about, but it still costs money.
The only free remedy I know is lots and lots of exercise. Walk miles, run, anything to tire your body. It helps to burn off the harmful neurochemicals that build up in the system that are produced by stress.
if you are really convinced you are bipolar and not just anxious, see a doctor.

Baked potatoes, eating them I mean, increases serotonin in your brain.
I wouldn't recommend eating potatoes all day, but it is a very common practice for health nuts who seriously will not consider taking prescription medication.

Please stay Away from antidepressants if you have bipolar (unless directed by a psychiatrist that knows your history and if taking another mood stabilizer with it) as they can actually cause a manic reaction. As you probably already know, bipolar, formerly referred to as 'manic depression' is thought to be biochemical and really needs professional medication such as lithium, zyprexa or others like that. Some pharmaceutical companies will help pay for meds if the person meets (low) income requirements.

Whatever medication that you last took that was helping you to become more functional, perhaps you can call the manufacturer and find out about patient assistance. It's vital that one gets and stays on the right meds. Please Only experiment with herbs with the permission of the doctor and/or pharmacist. There can be drug interactions if also take herbs and meds. Please do look into pharmacy assistance for your meds!

Look for Happy Camper at your health food store.

Anti-depressants, even herbal ones, are a bad plan for someone with bipolar. They could make you wildly manic if they work at all. There are all sorts of studies saying anti-depressants don't work on the chemical imbalance of a bipolar brain.
