There is no successful home remedy. It is an infection, that will require antibiotics in order to make it truly go away.

Additionally, it is HIGHLY contagious, and you should avoid interaction with any other people until you've been on the antibiotics for 24 hours.

You may find home treatments that make it feel better, or make the symptoms temporarily go away, but you'll need the meds to truly get better.

I agree with what Grace said...

the only other thing is, pink eye is REALLY infectious. So to avoid getting re-infected, or infecting your family, be very careful to wash everything you use, particularly your pillow, and your face cloth, and your towel!

I think it's often better to try and rest your eyes while you've got this, as well, so try and listen to music rather than watch TV, etcetera.

It really depends on what is causing the conjunctivitis in the first place. If it is viral, and only one eye is affected and the drainage is clear, it should clear itself in a few days time. If it's due to irritation, from smoke, chemicals, etc- then obviously staying out of the irritant will help a good deal. Allergic conjunctivitis also responds to the over the counter allergy medications. If it is bacterial, then you will notice a thick greenish discharge and the eye can goo shut overnight. If that's the case, then you really do need the antibiotic drops from the doctor. Warm compresses with a clean cloth each time will help soothe the eye in any case. If you wear contacts, get those out and leave them out. If they are not the disposable type, they should be left in the disinfectant solution, and it should get changed daily. You shouldn't wear them at all until the infection clears up. If it only affects one eye, you want to be very careful not to spread it to the other one. Keep your hands away from the eye unless they are fresh washed, and wash them with soap and water afterwards- before you touch any other place on your body. If it doesn't clear up by itself in a few days, or if you have the green goo, gunky eye, you need to see a doctor. Just don't go dropping the eyedrops in there, either the over the counter sort or the one's your "friend" has left in the cabinet. Those can do a lot more harm than good.
