Elderberry contains vitamin c which helps get rid of colds and also helps to stop you getting one. The elder tree has been used for years by country people as a cure all as the leaves and sap are antiseptic, the elderflower makes a lovely wine as do the berries, our own family make these wines every year and we very rarely have colds or flu, on the rare occasion we have caught a cold hot wine with lemon and honey cures it very quickly.
