To often folks think that when you are talking about alternative medicine, they think about a witch doctor or a Charmin. What is today considered alternative medicine is tomorrows general medicine. An example of this is aspirin, this was derived from the aspen trees by American Indians, ergo a witch doctor and now I can't think of what it must have been like before the use of it. Camille tea is used today for a number of different ailments and yet no one wants to call it by it's name. My son and daughter in-law are both medical doctors and they ask my wife what to do for their colicky, my wife's advise use some Camille tea, I should have pointed out that both my son and his wife are children's doctors. This is a great question so I think that the real answer is most folks do even when they don't know that they are using alternative medicine

I use medical marijuana everyday, I have benefited greatly from it

I believe in it because I use to feel really achy and many symptoms of fibromyalgia, narcolepsy and migraines and
I started using vitamins, minerals and herbal supplements and now I am healthier than thirty years ago.

My 9 year old Choux had cancer, fur falling out, refused to eat, drink or even move. I gave her supplements and within a month her fur came back thick and soft, she started eating and drinking and playing like a puppy. I had her one them for two years and her quality of life was great but then I couldn't afford them for a couple months and she got sick and Child Services made me have her put to sleep before I got a chance to start her back on the supplements again.

These alternative docs are great and if the people that think it is quackery took the time to watch these docs and their patients they would only still not believe only because of their closed minds. They have taken people the doctors said there was absolutely no hope for them and got them healthy.

I use herbal therapy whenever I need it. Key point: don't buy anything from the United States (maybe 1 or 2 companies are honest). Take Germany, for example: you can't buy Echinacea over the counter, you have to get it from the pharmacist. It's pharmaceutical grade, and tested by their FDA. Thus, MD's there write prescriptions for it as it were any other medication. Here, in the US, the FDA just assumes that companies don't lie on the bottles. They Do! That's why some people have really good luck on one bottle, but by the time they get to the second it doesn't work. Typically German/Austrialian companies are the way to go.

Remember, they are not to be 'stacked' with pharmaceuticals. For example, white willow bark is essentially aspirin. No safer than aspirin, and chemically no different. So, taking white willow bark and aspirin daily leads to ulcers twice as fast.

We use many different forms of alternative. Our top three in order are naturopath, chiropractor, homeopath. Herbalism follows as a close fourth. Unlike the mind set that medical treatment belongs to allopathy and MDs, alternative for us means using whichever treatment method is appropriate for the need. Not just one type. You mention herbal medical therapy, but I will answer from the paradigm I know, which is all inclusive.

Our family has lots of experience with alt med healing, and the list would be too long. Just a brief synopsis. I was diagnosed with a spinal birth defect by a chiropractor when I was 20 and having problems becoming pregnant. I had been in and out of ERs and MDs offices for 12+ years with varying complaints from random fainting spells to horrid cramps. I'd been poked, prodded, x-rayed, offered all sorts of pharmaceuticals, and insulted. Relief for all those symptoms came after finding the birth defect and correcting the alignment of my spine. I also was able to conceive.

My husband, who had undergone cancer surgery at 21, was having problems because of the treatments and exams for his cancer follow-ups. He finally went to a chiropractor/naturopath who got some of the physiology straightened out after docs removed his kidney and gave him no real life instructions about how to maintain it, and adjust his eating. He had such a hard time eating the first year it was terrible. The docs kept feeding him things that were hard on the one remaining kidney even though he was supposedly clean of all cancer. He finally stopped seeing the MDs and switched to the care of the Chiro/Naturopath.

Our daughter, oldest of 4, got whooping cough after being fully vaccinated. That was a horrible ordeal that landed us at the door of a good friend and herbalist. She introduced us to the idea of not vaccinating and mullein - our favorite herb. http://www.ashtreepublishing.com/Book_Ci...
A quick read of Neil Z. Miller's "Vaccines: Are They Really Safe and Effective" and our direction was headed even further away from modern medicine.

Finally, we changed states and made a conscious decision to change our health care. Not only did with drop our medical insurance, which wouldn't cover much of our new treatments so was a waste of money, we've also only seen an MD for two reasons on 10 years - a broken bone and an emergency respiratory hospitalization (that was eventually cured by a friend who is a veterinarian - how's that for alternative ;-)

We have a son who is on the autism spectrum, can't take antibiotics, and we are recovering with biomed. Some of his problems lead us to homeopathy, which has been successful for what we have needed. The most notable cure was his night time bed wetting. Boy, was he glad when we found something to stop that! Homeopathy was a charm there, where everything else had failed.

The biomed is part of a whole treatment program that is being very successful at recovering our son from Aspergers. See http://www.noamalgam.com for more about mercury poisoning, and where this is leading us now. This direction with our son has also helped us diagnose our youngest's chronic stomach aches, and other ailments. We are now self-treating her very successfully.

Our alternative path leads to much reading, mostly organic eating, getting as much as possible from food, but also supplementing to repair damage that has been done and conditions that were acquired pre-alternative lifestyle.

When thinking alternative med at our house, we think of it as a complete lifestyle with much to do with nutrition, exercise and prevention. We even bought a farm with its own spring water source, and where we could raise our own chickens and food as possible.

I find that most who think "alternative medicine" are still stuck in the allopathic paradigm of treating symptoms with magic pills. Alt Med is anything but. It is a lifestyle first, and a lot of personal education second. Third it is health care practitioners and remedies. But, only after the first two are met. The new paradigm is thinking symptom=effect, what was the cause? Then, we go hunting for the cause and eliminate it instead of just the symptoms.

I hope something there helps with what you are looking for.

Best health to you.

As a practitioner of Herbal Medicine, I studied for four years to gain my Bachelor qualifications. I treat people everyday using Herbal Medicine and find that it is Extremely effective when used under the guidance of a qualified health professional.
Many people self medicate without knowing what they are doing and this is where problems arise and results are not realised.
I would strongly suggest you seek quality education and training in Herbal Medicine as the last thing our industry needs is underqualified people out there putting others health at risk.
Best of luck, it is an interesting and inspiring field to work in.

It makes money..
That doesn't mean its beneficial. The vast majority of alt meds are shams/frauds/etc.
