Question about high vitamin dosage?!

Question: I consider myself a very healthy guy, but I seem to get eye stye's kind of often, so last week I started taking an eye vitamin & mineral supplement; 2 pills a day. A couple days ago, I felt nauseous, then yesterday I had a massive headache and then last night I got a horrendous, near-paralyzing cramp in my leg.

So, what's going with me? Is my body revolting against these supplements or is all this stuff just a coincidence? I didn't think any vitamin dosage could be too high, but maybe this is...

Here's the dosage:
Vitamin A: 28,640 IU
Vitamin C 452 MG
Vitamin E 400 IU
Zinc 69.6 MG
Copper 1.6 MG

Do you think I should cut down to 1 pill a day or just forget about these vitamins altogether?

Wow !! Are you certain that's the correct info for Vitamin A?? 5,000IU is the recommended daily dosage for adult males to prevent deficiency. Vitamin A is fat soluble, which means that it can be stored in your body and need not be replenished on a daily basis.... Vitamin A will counteract night blindness, weak eyesight and aid in the treatment of many eye disorders and also keep the outer lyaers of your tissues and organs healthy.

Eat more foods rich in Vitamin A ie: liver, carrotts, dark green and yellow vegetables, eggs, milk and dairy are also rich in vitamin A if you can tolerate the lactose and yellow fruits.

More than 50,000IU (international units) daily, if taken for many months, can produce toxic effects in adults.

More than 10,000IU of vitamin A is needed by the body if you are taking more than 400 IU vitamin E daily. Zinc is needed by the liver to get vitamin A out of its storage deposits and used by the body ........ The RDI/RDA as set by the national Research Council is 12 - 15 mg daily for adults..... so that's why A is combined with E & Zinc, also Vitamin A will help vitamin C from oxidizing and Zinc will increase the effects of Vitamin C ten fold thus helping reducing the length and severity of colds.

Eat more foods rich in Zinc ~ meat, liver, seafood (especially oysters), wheat germ, brewer's yeast, pumpkin seeds and eggs.

Eat more foods rich in vitamin E ~ wheat germ, soybeans, vegetable oils, nuts, brussels, sprouts, leafy greens, spinach, enriched flour, whole wheat, shole grain cereals and eggs.

Eat more foods rich in vitamin C as the whole food source will always be the most nutritious and beneficial for you. ie~ citrus fruits ~ lemons, limes and oranges, berries, green and leafy vegies, tomatoes, cantaloupe, potatoes and red and green peppers.

Copper is essential for the use of vitamin C by the human body an wil also keep your energy up by aiding in effective iron absorption (as does C).

Eat more foods rich in Copper ie~ dried beans, eas, whole wheat, prunes, organ meats, shrimp and most seafood.

Where's your B vitamins??

A deficiency in vitamin B12 will produce symptoms such as nausea and vomiting, headaches and migraines, chest pains and heart palpitations, dizzy spells, fainting and loss of balance, excessive sweating, night muscle spasms and leg cramps (B6 deficiency but B6 is needed for effective B12 assimilation)excessive urination and dry mouth (also B6 deficiency), fatigue and exhaustion, depression, tingling and prickling and numbing sensations in the outer extremities (also B6), insomnia and constipation, irritability and moodiness and an inability to think clearly ....Quite scary actually if you don't realise the vitamin factor.

Eat more foods rich in B12 ie: organ meats such as lambs fry and kidneys, skimmed milks and cheeses, fish and eggs.

If you are lactose intolerant or vegetarian then it is really important that you supplement your diet with a multi B complex tablet on a daily basis.

Things that could be robbing you of your precious B complex of vitamins are :- eating too much protein, alcohol, eating too much tinned food, antiobiotics, antidepressants, penicillin, prednisone and aspirin, otc cold and flu medicines.

Also, try to cut back on drinks such as caffeine, tea, sodas and soft drinks as they are all B complex thieves........ as well as being great at dehydrating you.

Take a multi B complex tablet including all the B's ie: B1, B2 B3, B5, B6 and B12 as they work best synergistically (together).

The B complex of vitamins is essential for healthy neural, digestive and immune system functioning.

The B complex of vitamins is a water soluble complex and as such our bodies can neither store or produce them. Therefore we need to ingest them on a daily basis or suffer the consequences as you unfortunately are......... a good point to make here is that if you are deficient in vitamin B12 you would therefore also be deficient in iron as iron also needs vitamin B12 to be properly assimilated by the body and hence you would be displaying iron deficiency anemia symptoms ie; fatigue and exhaustion, dizzy spells and fainting and paleness .

A good way to check if you are anaemic is to pull down the lower lid of your eyelids and check the coloring of the skin there. if it is pink or reddish then you are healthy, if it is pasty and pale then you are more than likely anaemic.

Eat more foods rich in iron ie: Pork, beef, liver, red meat, clams, dried peaches, egg yolks, oysters, nuts and beans, asparagus, molasses and oatmeal.

if you are drinking caffeinated beverages within an hour of eating your meals then you are more than likely inhibiting your iron absorption.

When you take your daily B complex supplement ensure that you take it with some type of calcium rich food ie: low fat cheese or milk or a calcium supplement as B12 needs calcium to be properly assimilated by the body........... ensure you also get enough sunshine (vitamin D) or eat cold water fishes such as tuna, salmon, sardines and whiting as calcium needs enough vitamin D to be effectively absorbed!! These cold water fishes are also a rich source of magnesium (known as the antistress mineral) which is probably another thing you need to focus on as well ~ your stress levels. Quite a handfull of information here ........ sorry it's a bit long winded but you need to know all this.

When our bodies are placed under added stress such as sickness, relationship dramas, new job, school studies or just daily life really, the B complex of vitamins are usually the first group to get used up and we therefore need to adjust our intake accordingly.

When you are getting any stress related symptoms or any of the above mentioned symptoms simply take another B tablet. As they are water soluble our bodies will simply excrete any excess in our urine.

Drink loads of fresh filtered water too as the happiest and healthiest body will always be the most hydrated one.

I sincerely wish you the best of health & vitality buddy?

CHEERS
?

Interesting.

Yeah, at those levels, the vitamins shouldn't really be having that type of effect on your body. It might be possible that you were just "sick" at the time.

I would drop down to one a day. Do that for a week (be sure to stay hydrated!) and then if you still feel bad, stop taking them and consult a physician or talk to a pharmacist at your local drugstore.

Have you talked to your doctor about the frequency of your styes? You might be allergic to something that you are coming in contact with on a reqular basis and never realized it.

28K is alot of a to take. if you do want to take high dosages start low and work up. zinc is better in small doses 12mg. look up zest for life, vitamin info. Also research eyebright sublinguel drops.

that much Vitamin A can't be good for you, don't know if it causes nausea though. Will destroy your liver faster than drinking.

That's a lot of zinc. The USRDA is 15mg daily. And zinc on an empty stomach is almost guaranteed to cause nausea . If the amounts you list are for one pill, then I recommend you take only 1, and that with full meal.

The copper & zinc are out of balance in this supplement. I can't imagine that it is causing your symptoms, but I wouldn't recommend it long-term. Too much zinc will cause you to become low on copper.

Is the Vitamin A as Beta-carotene? If you have low thyroid function you may not get much good out of beta-carotene. If you have impaired liver function you should not take large amounts of vitamin A as fish oil.

Back to the stye - Hot compresses will relieve. Raspberry leaves prepared as a tea make a good eyewash for styes or any eye irritation. Vitamin A deficiency can cause frequent styes...

AND, gently feel the outside surface of your eyelids. Are they lumpy? If you can stand to do so, turn one eyelid inside out and see if there are any yellow bumps or deposits there. These are indicators of toxins in the liver.

You can help yourself by taking Milk Thistle Seed extract for 60 days. Or buy a combination for cleansing the liver that may contain Milk Thistle Seed, Dandelion Root & Burdock Root. While cleansing, drink lots of water and take a non-soluable fiber to keep the bowels moving freely so you don't reabsorb the toxins you are dumping into your kidney & bowel.

A few years ago I was having styes & bumps. Then I read that they were first sign of liver malfunction & did the cleanse. No more dry eyes, styes & my vision improved dramatically. Now I also take cod liver oil a couple times a year because I have mild hypothyroid condition & don't convert my carrots and sweet potatoes into usable A.

Cut them out for about a week and then take what the bottle says or less NEVER more
You CAN over dose on some vitamins and MOST minerals.
overdosing minerals can be very dangerous.
also you should optimize them with each other
take A, C, E, zinc, selenium, copper together

calcium, magnesium, potassium and vitamin D work together

B vitamins, energy and memory supplements work together.

balancing vitamins and minerals

Vitamin A, beta carotene can temporarily turn your skin orange.
C you can take up to 1,000 mg (even more for colds)

zinc you should never take more than 15 mg
copper 3.0mg

--zinc toxicity

If you drink a mug of hershey's cocoa (in the plastic can not the instant) you get a good amount of balanced zinc and copper.

Your vitamin A intake is very high but still below the danger and overdose level. Perhaps you should reduce it down to 10,000 IU per day or even 5,000 IU a day.

Your zinc intake is very high and is getting close to the danger and overdose level which is normally regarded as being 80 mg per day. Perhaps you should reduce it down to 50 mg per day or even 25 mg a day. It is good that you are taking copper with it as a high zinc intake can cause a copper deficiency as the zinc is likely to be preferentially absorbed at the expense of copper.

forget about the vitamins if you are taking them in little bottles you chose yourself or someone else chose for you. What you should be supplementing your normal eating with is like a one-a-day plus minerals (or a centrum) because there are less vitamins in our food these days.

A stye is caused from wiping your eyes with dirty hands or not clean towels or rag or wiping your eyes with the sleeve of a dirty shirt. Some people would suggest to you that you use a hand sanitizer, but I suggest that you don't rub your eyes, and, when you get home from work start cleaning your hands with rubbing alcohol and then after a few minutes rinse your hands, and clean the dirt from under your fingernails. Make sure your pillow case is clean as you may be getting grease and dirt from your hair onto your pillow case and then it rubs off and into your eyes. Wash your hair daily, or twice a day till this matter gets resolved. Don't re-use your clothes day after day, take fresh ones daily. And, anything you've worn that are in your wash bin be sure you wash those clothes with some washing liquid that has bleach or bleach substitute in it and wash them in hot water to get rid of any infection that may still be lurking. If you are using contacts then the solution you are using is contaminated. Throw out all the solutions you use and start fresh.

WHOOAAA THERE ease up on the Vitamin A content there bud...28,000 units!!!!!..Holy crap son your not supposed to be taking more than 5,000 international units of that unless prescibed by a doctor!!...Just stick with the vitamin c and quit taking all the rest of that mess...Seriously dont take to much of ANYTHING!

Is that Vitamin A or beta carotene at 28,649 IU. And is that the dosage per pill or for two pills?

If Vitamin A, that is a toxic dose, over 5 times the safe daily dose if dose is for two pills, over 10x if that amount is in one pill. Zinc is at the upper end of the safe level if the dose is for two pills, double the safe amount if for one pill.

The supplement has the vitamins that are usuallly used for people with a specific kind of age related macular degeneration. This supplement will have no effect on styes.

Styes are like acne of the eyelids, usually associated with blepharitis and malfunction of the oil glands in the lids. Other skin disorders including dandruff and acne are often associated with blepharitis. Styes can be prevented with good eyelid hygiene including daily lid scrubs. Occasionally a prescription eye ointment is needed and rarely oral tetracycline is needed. Some people find that 2000mg a day of flax seed oil helps with preventing styes.

See the link below for a discussion of how to self treat blepharitis.
