going to a chiropractor doesn't do anything for bipolar disorder.
i'd know if it did or not since i had to go to a chiropractor for a few weeks. there aren't any alternatives to fully treat it. you need to go to a psychiatrist.
First and foremost you must have someone to talk to help you work out issues in your life and to help with accountability. Ideally this would be a psychiatrist because sometimes modern therapies are the only ones that work. You must also be relentless in practicing good sleep hygiene. That means always go to bed at a reasonable time and sleep enough to never be sleep deprived. Avoid caffeine and excessive alcohol use as well.
As for research on alternative therapy for bipolar disorder, I did a medical journal search. There have been published reports of affective disorders (that includes bipolar) being diagnosed and treated effectively with acupuncture. There was also a case report of one patient with rapid-cycling bipolar disorder who experienced complete remission of symptoms with long term chiropractic care using upper cervical techniques. A fairly large randomized study looked at Free and Easy Wanderer Plus (FEWP) in conjunction with Tegretol (generic name carbamazepine). People taking FEWP were less likely to experience adverse effects of Tegratol and more continued the medication.
