Answers: Much better than legal drug pushers a.k.a medical doctors will treat you with.

Go for it.

yeahh

People have been practicing them for thousands of years, many quite successfully. I think they're a great compliment and/or alternative to modern medicine.

I love It wish there was one were I live

My opinion is that some of them might actually be effective, or more effective, if the conventional therapy they are complimenting is ceased.

Example: alkalizing the body with diet and alkalizing supplements isn't as successful if the individual continues to use alot of medications. (Most meds acidify, counter-acting the alkalizing diet.)

And others may noit be appropriate at all. Study as much as you can, and always keep an open mind.

My two cents.

I think they are wonderful as a preventative, but you should see a medical doctor if you become ill. My mother works at a hospital and many, many years ago a lady was admitted with terminal breast cancer. It could have been successfully treated if it was caught earlier, but she had been treating herself at home with herbal remedies. By the time she came in, it was too late. Very sad.

not shure?

We don't call them complementary, we call them natural or traditional. We don't do MDs, and that is what complementary implies - that you do MDs and use others as supplement. MDs are only for emergencies in our family, like accidents, broken bones, immediate intervention due to life threatening situation. For regular care we use naturopath, homeopath and chiropractic, with some herbs in there too. Those are front line defenses in this household and have been for over a decade now.

My opinion is that they were more often, more effectively, and more safely than allopathic (MD) care. It is experiential knowledge based on the maintenance of our own health over my adult life and that of my family's. That includes the horrible experience that my mom had with allopathic care which was reversed by naturopathy and chiropractic. She was nearly crippled by MDs and their diags and pills. With arthritis, thyroid, yeast and a host of other issues that they threw useless drugs like valium at her for, my dad carried her into a chiropractor one day. Within a short time she was off ALL of the meds, and doing much better. Even with chronic thyroid

She is now 69 and drug free, working to support herself, living life on her own and loving it! She started our turn down the better road. One day I'll have to write the tale of our adventure so I can just link to the website and let people read what most find unbelievable for themselves.

BTW - It is also MUCH cheaper than the alternative. We don't do health insurance, pay any necessary health bills out of pocket, and barely even make a dent in our middle income budget. For those who say that they are out to rip people off, I'd like to know who you are talking about! We can't even walk into the ER for the price our homeopath charges for a complete history and evaluation, same said for our naturopath. We've used them, we know! Yes, there are probably gimmicks, but you don't call Lipitor or Viagra gimmicks? and expensive ones at that!

they were the norm once upon a time.

modern medicine stems from herbalism.

homeopathy came about because Samuel Hahnemann who was a renowned physician of his time was so disillusioned by the way modern methods were not dealing with cause of the illness and often causing other illnesses along the way.

I think the evidence of ancient civilizations and their use of holistic therapies says it all.

I have used alternative therapies for 10 years now, homeopathy in particular is my favoured therapy. My children are all treated by a homeopath in preference to a gp.

It makes sense to me, that you treat the whole person - mind, body and spirit, that you deal with the cause not just treat a symptom and that you dont poison the rest of the body in the meantime.

I trust in homeopathy enough to have started my four year training/studying.

As for placebo - biggest placebo is a man in a white coat with a big needle!!
Lets face it a tiny little white sugar pill isnt convincing is it?

I have had countless personal experiences of proof over 10 years and met many other people with their own evidence too.

I have been using holistic supplements, skin and body products for 8 years now. I use no synthetic scents and no longer have headaches. I so believe in algae supplements, essential oils, and the most natural products I can find. I have been lucky enough to find a doctor that is not only an MD but also has holistic training, so she gives me a choice of how I want to be treated. I have been to her once in all that time for an illness, which I could have prevented if I had laid off the sugar and dairy products. I am a believer in giving the holistic approach a chance, at least, before I go running to a conventional doctor and prescription drugs.

I find that they work better than medicine form the chemist.

This becomes a big topic that really divides opinion. Part of the problem can also be defining what is a complementary therapy. Some of them are much better than others, eg things such as acupuncture, naturopathy, homeopathy are much more established than some others. I feel the main complementary therapies are much better for you, when done by properly trained people they treat the whole of the person, and will not cause harm (as long as done properly).

Whereas how many pills that GP's dish out have initially passed so called 'clinical trials' (which are too often artificially contrived and extremely poorly done) - then have to get pulled from the market because once used in the real world they are found to cause to greater side effects and deaths.

There is of course a place for both. The trouble is deciding when and how.

I think they work wonders, everyone i have spoken to that has recieved any kind of complimentary therapies has benefited. All the methods are really interesting and are backed by hundreds of years of practice. Not enough people give them a chance and are too sceptical.

Most of it is nonsense, and is best considered as a placebo to aid minor conditions.

For example, homeopathic remedies continually fail clinical trials, as do reiki, acupuncture etc.

This is an easy to understand article exposing homeopathy.

The "Natural" or "Holistic" sellers are JUST AS GREEDY and out for a profit as the "Big-Pharm" that is denounced as "Evil".

$100.00 for a Magic Crystal that will cure your depression, Cold Sore, and Cancer?

How is that not irresponsible?

Universities and Scientists do not say that Holistic Therapies "Don't Work" until there is PROOF that they don't work...

They do studies with no bias to determine if they work or if they don't.

ALLLLLLLL drugs from "Big-Pharm" START as a natural product... They START with leaves and herbs and bugs and animals...

They take the substances found in nature and study them and refine them until they turn them into a better working version of what nature provides.

Willow Bark and Aspirin are 99% the same thing... But Willow Bark is "Natural" and Asprin is "Evil Big-Pharm".

BUT

Aspirin is not only BETTER WORKING but it is less damaging to the stomach...

EVERYONE is out to make a profit...

The naturalists AND big-pharm.

If you think that these holistic people are not peddling "Snake Oil" to squeeze every Penney they can from their customers then you are deluding yourself and allowing these scam artists to continue offering False Hope and placebo in place of studied medicine and treatments with more then "The Chinese have used this for thousands of years" behind it...

The Chinese also drink ground seahorses and tiger penis soup... And we know that these don't do a damn thing...
