Disadvantages to castile soap?!

Question: i guess all glycerine is from animal unless they specify otherwise. so we bought castile soap. why isnt this stuff more popular or used more often? i have trouble even finding it in a regular store. my bf is vegetarian and just starting using peppermint and tea tree oil castile soaps. i love them too and i'm not vegetarian! i wonder if burts bees makes castile soap, i bet they do. or toms of maine.

from what i understand, castile soap has a high alkalinity level, ph 9 to 11...skin and hair have a ph 5 to 6...therefore it dries skin out. maybe this is why it isn't as popular? i have trouble finding supplies in the stores where i live, also...it's getting to the point where i have to buy everything online...sadly :(.
