I use organic sage from my garden and sometimes add basil and mint as these are associated with prosperity (I have heard that burning a cinnamon stick will also bring prosperity, but haven't tried it yet). Oregano is also good for its anti-septic qualities. It still smells like a pot party for a couple of days but I kinda like that...

Native Americans use sage, sweet grass and tobacco ( leaves, not the stuff you smoke) depending on the use. Hope this helps.

Hemp

Dragonfl.... I'm new to this category. I don't know what those terms mean and I'm curious....explain?

The most commonly used ones are sweetgrass and sage (as SuziQ said) and many people use lavender.

Some people prefer using lavender because the scent isn't as marijuana-like as sweetgrass and sage are.

i have used sage, but now i use a oil called tea tree oil,

As many have said, Sage and Sweetgrass are both good for smudging. But follow your nose, too. There are a lot of smudging herbs to use. You could use some that are pleasing to your sense of smell if you like.

Most of what you do is the intended act, but the correct herb for smudging is also important.

There are a number of books out there that can also help with that decision.

I've always used white sage and as i'm australian, eucalyptus leaves, they are what are native to australia... so it's a natural cleanser and have been used as the american indians use sage (its very tea tree like) and it makes good smudge... Try making your own smudge stick and empower it with what you need it for. Also rosemary, lavender.
Sandalwood, cedarwood, frankincense and benzoin in natural form always work for me used on a hot coal in a nice pottery pot or bowl with earth and pebbles or rough sand to keep the heat from cracking the pot
I also use salt to cleanse, as its very grounding, combined with a little chant or affirmation of what you'd like to cleanse the area of and what you'd like to bring into the area.
Good fresh breeze to open the house up. :)

I don;t use herbs- I use Sandalwood....it's a light, clean scent that won't gag you, and is as ancient as time.

Sage is most used... But I actually like Mugwort. (try it sometime)

Sage, Western prarie sage, Kinninnikinik, Red Cedar, Lavender, Rosemary, Bay, Thyme, and yes, Tobacco are excellent cleansing and purification herbs to burn to smudge ar room or even the enitre home. Check your other correlations to get the best results for the purpose that you wish to cleanse the area for.

Brightest Blessings,
