Enemas as a fever reducer/hydrator...?!

Question: Instead of using medicines such as aceteminophen to reduce my childrens fevers, i have always used cool/warm water enemas to not only bring down their fever but hydrate the body at the same time... I believe aceteminophen is used entirely too much for the treatment of fevers and can potentially be harmful... any thoughts?

I agree that tylenol is overused in today's society, especially if the fever is under 103 degrees (in children, 102 in adults). However, the enemas will not hydrate the body the way you would think. They will actually deplete the body's water supply. In the large intestine, the body is already resorbing water from the digested food, and a percentage of our water comes from that source. If you 'speed-up' the mechanism, then the child will eliminate waste and the water from the enema faster. So, you are essentially depleting water stores in the body; thus, losing some water to gain some water. You may, however, drop the temperature that way. Just make sure you keep the child hydrated. How much is the temp dropping?

How to hydrate the body? Mix 1/2 water with 1/2 apple juice, every couple days add a pinch of sea salt to the mix. Will give you proper electrolytes, and allow the child to stay hydrated. Gatorade is to 'stiff' for children.

Back to the tylenol, I think it should be prescription because it is so overused/misused. Overuse when young leads to overuse when old.

There are infant and child suppositories for pain and fever.

Have the child sip on water or soda or gator aide for hydration.

If the child won't take drinks- go to a hospital.

What reason do you have to believe acetaminophen is bad ?
It's fine as long as your child is not a drunk.

Well that one is not for me!! :) Unless the fever is high or he is in pain I will usually just let the body do what it does and let it break itself. I freeze pedialyte into posicles to keep him hydrated as well as cooling him down.and diluted hot lemonade to help. Do what you are comfortable with. I agree we do use pills to much.
