Has anyone had any bad experiences with chiropractic adjustments?!

Question: I have had both good and bad experiences, both as a patient and as a doctor. It's a good thing that I have many more good experiences than bad. The kicker is, if you have a condition that can be treated by manipulation, it works great. If you just have some pain that can be helped through soft tissue work, and a manipulation is done anyway. It could aggravate the condition.

I feel bad for the woman who went to a chiropractor for a year, only to find out she had a broken vertebra. Sometimes a fracture can be classified as an occult fracture. After a couple of treatments with no results, the responsible thing to do is to send out for an MRI or a CT, depending on the history. An occult fracture would have turned up.

One thing to remember that is any effective treatment has the potential to cause injury. Only an entirely inert therapy is totally without risk. (this is loosely based on a quote)

Yes I do know of someone that afterwards had more pain and trouble sitting and walking.

I have. I fell down a flight of stairs. The chiropractor took x-rays and told me nothing was broken. I was in extreme pain. After a year of having my back pushed on and being told " I don't know why your back won't stay in place." I was still going 2 and 3 times a week, I went to a medical Dr. She ordered x-rays. I found out I had a fractured vertebrae and compressed disk. The chiropractor had been pushing on my injury for all that time and it wasn't getting a chance to heal. I went to physical therapy after that and had a fast recovery.
Do you think I could be rich today if I would have sued him?

well they found my problem , but unfortunatly they couldnt fix my problem...........so i guess it was 50-50

Left the office crying so bad cause I was in worse pain than when I had walked in,, I have a homeopathic chair(like a shiatsu)that massages and does moist heat. I was on that & in bed for two days, bad thing is it cuts off every fifteen minutes.Could hardly get up to go to bathroom-had to use a walker that I had from a previous surgery. P.S. Got chair at Wal Mart for 39.99 also plugs into truck, I don't drive that often but when I do it comes in handy.

Yes. The worst was an overweight man who just kinda laid on me to crack it. He didn't look at the x-rays first, felt around and said, "this area seems tense" adjusting areas that I don't have problems with and sent me away worse than I was when I showed up.

A brother team also worked on me. The one always made me better, the other it just seemed like I didn't get an adjustment. I guess one just had the touch for me, the other didnt.

I'm searching for a new one now, and by referral and good word is what I'm going by. Now saving the money....thats another story.

Good luck if you're looking for one. I hope you find a good one. and if you had a bad experience, I feel your pain...literally!

Yes I think they make things worse.

No, but if you don't have a good Chiropractor, you're not going to get much good. It's best to get referals from people you know/trust... that's what I did, and I found a great Chiropractor that way.

The biggest danger is with cervical manipulation. There have been cases of death as a result of this procedure and it is generally not recommended.

Chiropractic spinal "adjustments" never seemed to do anything positive for my back injuries. The only good treatments that the chiro delivered were the ones that were not unique to chiropractic (e.g. ice, heat, massage, ultrasound, magnetic stimulation, strengthening excercises, etc.). These modalities are practiced by other areas of conventional medicine, like physiotherapy and rehab. So I stopped seeing chiros and switiched to physio instead and had much better results and with better HMO coverage.

I never did buy into the whole "subluxation" story that chrios espouse either. Frankly, I think it is a crock and I especially didn't like it when some of the chiros told me that adjustments could cure conditions like diabetes and depression.

I have had both.I have been in 3 rear enders.Too much adjustment is bad and I had a chiropracter that listened to me.When i reacted adversely to the manipulation he would be careful not to hurt me.He was good. But there was once when he was doing an acupuncture procedure on the back of my neck where he placed one, needle the spot blew up the size of an eraser on a pencil.I called him back to the room when it started hurting and I felt the knot,he removed it and said that had never happened before. He would not do any more acupuncture on me.

No, I can't help you there, sorry.

No , but they scared me because of all the pops I heard. I am reluctant to go back if I should need it

no I have had concerns before even going there. scuse my messed up memory, I have been to physical therapy for my back. or what ever they were doing, it was kind of weird.

I have had some be too forceful with me and that did not help. I only go to one I have found who is gentle and will try new things if something isn't working. I do think they can help to a certain degree, I like it better than just medicine that covers up symptoms without relieving them.

Hope you feel better soon, or whoever you are concerned for!
