Natural cold remedies, not herbal?!

Question: I'm suppose to be having a minor surgery on Friday and I have this huge list of medications I can't take, it includes herbal remedies. OF COURSE now I'm starting to feel a cold coming on, after I've been fine all winter. This is a surgery I really need to have done and I don't want to reschedule it unless I have to.

Does anyone have a natural, like food/drink, remedies to help fight off a cold? Anything is welcome! Just no herbal.

There is a very thin line between natural treatment and herbal treatment. Any ways you can see some good home remedies at Mamaherb. You can sort each and everyone to see to how many people each treatment actually helped; you can get ratings of each treatment; a survey is attached to each, to know what to expect and comments which create a conversation about each treatment. In addition, you can chat with the publisher of the treatment and ask him direct questions and talk to people who suffer from the same problem. I hope it can help you.

Herbal is natural, and will work best, but since you dont want to I would say just go with honey. Suck on some honey a few times a day and it should help you.

When we were kids, grandma made us eat a whole yellow onion and several cloves of garlic at the first sniffle and it worked. Chop and simmer in broth or water with whatever spices you like,
I usually add a pinch of chili powder, and saffron if I want it to feel a bit decadent. Soup is done when garlic and onions are tender. Do not fry them first! Hope this helps

Ginger with Coke or with water and brown sugar can fight off a cold. The recipes are:
- Slice a few fresh ginger root and boil in one and a half cups of water over medium heat. Add some brown sugar. Drink and stay in bed to perspire.
- Prepare the above ginger root drink with Coke instead of water and brown sugar.
Another drink is lemon with honey. Add honey and a few slices of lemon to a cup of hot water and drink.

You need to bolster your immune system sweetie.......... ensure that you are getting enough sleep each night and try to focus on a well balanced diet to also help bolster your immune system? focus on eating more fresh fruits and vegies, lean meats and fishes, wholegrains and cereals and ground nuts and seeds and plenty of fresh filtered water?

?Here's just a few good old fashioned common sense things that you can do to reduce the chances of getting a full blown cold.Go get yourself a powdered form of ascorbid acid (vitamin C) with bioflavonoids from either the health food store or chemist. The bioflavonoids will increase the effectiveness of vitamin C 10 fold. Have 3,000 - 4,000mg (3 - 4 teaspoons) daily mixed with water until the cold subsides then maintain your immunity with 1 teaspoon daily.

Most health food stores also sell a product called Zinc Fix which combines the power of vitamin C with Zinc in a powdered form. The Zinc bolsters the effects of vitamin C and this is my powder of choice for a cold.

Increase your intake of vitamin C rich foods on a dialy basis to prevent any further infection and to reduce the amount of time you are ill...... ie: citrus fruits, berries, leafy and green vegies, tomatoes and red and green peppers.

Loads of freshly squeezed juices are good too.

Ensure you are drinking plenty of pure filtered water to flush the germies out of your body .......... and keep you well hydrated ....... avoid sugar as it will create a feeding ground for bacteria ~ virus, and also avoid caffeine containing beverages such as coffee, tea, soda and soft drinks, as these will only serve to dehydrate you and rob your body of essential B & C vitamins.

Ensure you are drinking or eating something with Beta - carotene in it daily to heal quicker and in future to prevent further colds, as Vitamin A will aid in the proper function of the immune system, shorten the duration of illnesses and generally bolster the health of the mucosal lining of your ear nose and throat ie: carrott juice, pumpkin soups.

Take a good quality multi B complex supplement on a daily basis both now while you're sick and for future prevention methods. The B complex of vitamins is essential for healthy immune, digestive and neural functioning and will help your body deal with the extra stress of being ill.

Things such as caffeine, sodas and soft drinks, antidepressants, antibiotics, diuretics, laxatives and aspirin and most otc cold medicines and alcohol will also do a great job of robbing you of your precious B vitamins.

Also, a good vapour inhalant when you have a cold is to put a couple of drops of eucalyptus oil into a salad bowl of hot water and .......... being carefull not to get so close as to burn your face ......... place a towel over your head and inhale the vapours. This will do a great job of clearing your sinuses, help in reducing any temperature you may have and to loosen and remove mucous.

Caution: Avoid using eucalyptus oil if you have high blood pressure or suffer from epilepsy.

Good luck & health & vitality to you & yours?

CHEERS

There are a lot of people who swear by putting da few drops of peroxide in each ear every four hours for a the first few days believing it kills the bacteria before it sets in (believing cold viruses enter the body through the ears). It's worked for me a few times and shortened the cycle or kept it away when I was just starting to feel sick. It also cures wax buildup and is considered completely safe.
