I think you're thinking of Valerian root. It can be made into a tea or I think it comes in capsules or tablets (I would think the tea would be more soothing just because it's a warm liquid and the ritual of having hot tea is relaxing in itself). It used to be used more in decades past, when sleeping pills were not as widely used and there were limited choices in them.

Just to be sure we're clear, this type of herb should not be used as a supplement TO sleeping pills, that is, don't use BOTH at the same time. But they are a supplement that some people use INSTEAD of sleeping pills. Hope that's what you meant.

Chamomile.

sleepy time

there are a few-

chammomile
passiflora
valerian root

Chamomile is the best. You can also try other herbs like
lemon balm, valerian and lavender flowers. They can be bought in bulk and put in a tea strainer.

Ashwaghanda tincture two drops in water or on tongue at night. You will sleep better and deeply.Good for stress and to wake you up take some Rhodiola in the morning.

One of them is tea made of lemon balm and mint. Both herbs are well known for their mild sedative proprieties.
