I've had a cough for ages now; anyone got any great alternative remedies?!

Question: I use Oil of Oregano from Vitamin World. Some people find the gel caps hard to swallow. It will leave you an aftertaste, but it is great for coughs. I've been using it for about 9 years and did not have a cough all of that time. I do have one now because I have oedema and it caused me problems with breathing and I became congestion and got a cough. The Oil of Oregano stopped my cough very well. You should not suppress a productive cough because you have to get rid of the phlegm. But when it becomes so bad you need something to stop it. You will not regret using it. It usually helps within 10 - 15 minutes. Take 2 twice a day for a mild cough, 4 twice a day for a very bad cough. Take them for at least 5 days.

Go to the doctor and get some antibiotics...

try airbourne. i thought i was getting the flu so i drank it all day and i felt amazing the next day.

ts called a chronic cough, i know what you talking about i used to have this irritating cough which used to last for months on end, and i used to drink cough mixture like crazy, all i didwas go on a course of antibitoics and it went away as i did not know i had a lung infection.

see a doctor

Tea is really great for coughs.

boild water and salt

breathe heavily over the uprising steam

do this daily

sleep with a humidifyer in your room. it really helps clear out your lungs.

you have to find the source of the cough....
phelgmy?
just at night when you try to sleep?
only when you're at work?

have to find the source and treat the source...if your allergic to dust or pets... take allergy pills... if its asthma cough, use inhaler.....
for quick fixes... halls cough drops!!

I don't have any alternative remedies but it could be asthma. I had a cough for a long time and no one could figure out what was going on and I was finally diagnosed with asthma. You might try to drink some tea and honey.

Sometimes a Dr. can give you a script for a stronger cough medicine cause your throat is probably raw by now and suppressing the cough can help it to heal ...but if you keep coughing and it's not from a simple cold..then you might want to go get it looked at. Hmmm?
I read somewhere that honey works good to sooth the throat.
Hope you feel better soon :))

Talk to a doctor..? maybe..

My friend who's majoring in bio & chem just helped me out with a bad cough. Here's what she had me do for a few days:

Boil hot water. Pour it into a mug. Squeeze a slice of lemon into the mug and then toss the slice in. Add honey to taste. Do *not* add tea.

On my own I also discovered inhaling the steam from this boiling concoction helped, too. And remember to take all precautions and sip it, I don't want you suing me if you burn yourself!!

Traditional Medicinals "Throat Coat" tea. It contains the herb "slippery elm" which literally coats the throat and provides nearly instant relief. Add lots of honey (mildly aenesthetic and antibiotic) and lemon (antiseptic).

sage leaf, loquat leaf, licorice root, wild cherry bark, marshmello root. Try one or two of these in a tea for a few weeks and see how you feel. You can always change it up if one or more doesn't seem to help.

ages?

i think you should go get tested for tuberculosis.

Being a smoker, an asmatic, a yogini, and singer, I have done a lot of experimenting with different ways of getting rid of a cough. The most effective way I've come across so far, is the deep-chest saltwater gargle. I get about 1 cup warm water and dissolve about a teaspoon of salt in it. Then, I gargle with noise, allowing the salt-water to go down into my bronchule tubes. When I automatically cough, I know that I've gargled deep enough. I repeat this until the water is gone. Do this for a week and chances are, your cough will disappear.

Like many others said, it really depends on where the cough is stemming from. The Throat Coat tea is a good place to start, will certainly help. I also recommend s couple drops of Clove Essential Oil in a cup of water and down it. Be careful and make sure it says 100% Therapeutic Grade Oil or 100% Food Grade Oil on the bottle you use or you could get very sick.

Another, very simple thing I like to try is to take a VERY long hot shower. Sit in the bottom of your tub and really let the hot water run over you. Take lots of deep breathes. This helps relax and open up your lungs, helping them to relax a bit.

If it is due to post-nasal-drip I highly recommend a Nettie Pot. It is a beautiful investment and will do wonders for any kind of head cold you may get.

If none of these things seem to work, go see a doctor. It could be a bronchial infection, a lung infection that could turn into pneumonia, or even worse (especially if you were ever a smoker).

Like the first guy said, honey is meant to be the best. Mixing it with lemon juice can be good too. just take a teaspoon of the honey/lemon like a cough syrup.

Any cough persisting more than a week, should be evaluated by a physician. Here are a few simple home remedies that will help to overcome cough. Have honey in a hot drink before bed time.To relieve fits of coughing due to dryness in the throat, suck a few pepper corns.
