A friend gave me Concerta to help me out on the SATs...?!

Question: He said i would focus better, even though it's not perscribed to me. Does anyone know anything about taking Concerta if you're not perscribed it? Is it too risky? Will it even do anything for me at all??

I personally thinking using these types of drugs to increase academic performance is bad, and goes against my principles.
However, I know a lot of people that have done it (adderall, concerta and ritalin, the specific one varies case by case), and dramatically improved their test scores. If you have trouble focusing or thinking quickly (which most people do), they make a huge difference.
I think the problem occurs when you use the stuff continuously (ie. everytime you have a test or quiz in college, or are behind on homework); occassional ones like right before the SAT are fine.
These types are drugs are getting continuosly more and more used in colleges, and they are basically having 2 results:
1) Raising the curve on tests
2) Messing people up (their nervous systems specifically) from overuse and sleep deprivation.

If you make the choice to use something like this now, it will probably make a huge difference for your sat scores, it just can often be the start of a slippery slope where you use it more and more and get health problems.

If you plan to use it for the SAT's, I would advise trying it one time beforehand though so you can get an idea of how it affects your test performance.

Few comments in regards to what other people are saying;
1) You cannot get in trouble or busted for doing this. There is no way to check or test for it, and tons of people are already doing it.
2) Most ADD medication are already prescribed for people who are basically normal (aka don't have ADD), so the idea that "you should not ever use it unless you have ADD and a doctors prescription," is just sorta off. Most of the people that perscribe this stuff are incompetent to begin with, and just are doing what the pharma companies told them to do (sell ADD drugs), not say actually diagnosing the person and figuring out what will happen.

You shouldn't take medicines that aren't prescribed for you. If you need help concentrating, then talk to your doctor yourself.

Probably not a good idea...

Its definitely not a good idea.

Besides, if they find out you took drugs to help your score, they could cancel it.

The safest thing to do would be not take the pill until you are evaluated by a board certified licensed physician.

My son takes concerta because he is ADHD. if you are not ADHD you will NOT focus better. Concerta has sideffects, lack of appertite and sleep. both of which my son wrestles with.

Concerta helps adhd ppl to concetrate by playing with the chemicals in their brain, and releasing the nerotransmitter that helps them to slow down and think.

If your not ADHD, these neurotransmitters your fooling with will make you hyper

and high.

you would be risking your health,
and not to mention showing up at school high would definitely be caused for suspension

never take anything that is not prescribed for you.

You shouldn't take drugs unless you have a medical reason for taking them.

I wouldn't take it unless the doctor gives it to you them types of medicine are not for all people and alot of people get hooked on them and don't realize it until it's to late and they don't want to turn back. If you need help concentrating go to the doctor and see what they say. Or get some energy pills they might help you can get them at normal stores in your town or at the gas station

You definately Should NOT take it! It can do many things to your mental stability & you could even become violent. Only a Licensed Proffessional Psychiatrist can prescribe this to you. You could end up in serious trouble from the effects, (not to mention what it could do to your mental or overall health). It is for those with ADHD symptoms, but it is also a stimulent & can have major adverse effects, especially if you don't have a diagnosis for it. & even then, only a liscensed proffessional can know if it is okay for you to take.

If you dont have adhd or add ect. this will be like doing bad coke, speed, ect. It could really hinder your grades rather than help DONT TAKE IT

I would not take it man it might help you cuz it a stimulant I think but as someone that has took alot of different medicines that wasnt prescribed to me.. Its not worth it. and if you go to the doctor and tell him u r having concentration problems then he might prescribe something that will benefit you more. You nver know you might be alergic to something in concerta. My cousin took a Xanex that someone gave him and he was allergic to the dye in the pill and his lip and face swelled up for 3 days

Try FOCUS FACTOR. I have seen it on TV and it improves concentration. But i would ask my doctor if you really want something precribed to you.
