Does going to a Reiki session go against christanity?!

Question: I went for the first time to have a Reiki session. The lady that does massages in town recommended it....to give it a try. I read up on it on the internet and was kinda curious. Scheduled an appointment and met with the lady. Was there for almost 2 hours. Talking and for the actual session. Some amazing sensations occurred and a few unexplainable things also.

My question is this.... I would be heart broken if this is considered an "evil" thing or something pagonistic. I have read both sides of the coin on this issue. Some sites support it, some sites do not.

I am looking for any Reiki Masters that can better explain this to me.

Thanks

I'm a Reiki Master... here are my thoughts. Why would it go against any religion? What is the difference (from a Christian point of view anyway) between something like Reiki and "laying on of hands healing"? When I was a kid these special priests would come to church sometimes to do healing at special services. Christians, especially Catholics (being raised one myself), believe in some pretty weird stuff, IMO. Why not believe in something that you can actually feel happen as much as any other of your senses? To me Reiki is more good and real than anything I experienced in a lifetime of Catholic schools and church, etc. But thats me.

I have never heard of or felt that Reiki was "evil" in the least bit. Quite to the contrary, the heart of any Reiki teaching is love and compassion for yourself and others, if not some essence of spiritual and personal growth. Would this not be parallel to Christian doctrine? I don't see that praying for healing is so different. In fact, I could see Reiki help you create a stronger bond to a religion as its spiritual for many people who experience it.

I would like to add this... There are different schools of thought within the Reiki community as a whole. There are many different styles and adaptations, arguments over what is or is not cannon. When Reiki was "westernized" it was quickly amalgamated with New Age type lifestyles. Even I think some of these people are a little wacky or "airy fairy", if you will. Some people try to incorporate a Wiccan type style to Reiki, that, in my opinion, is not what I truly consider Reiki. I practice a more traditional Japanese style that resembles something like a meditation. Again, it is one of those things that you make your own, although it can never be used to do harm in any case. People are quick to make judgments and first impressions on Reiki can be unpredictable based on its variety.

That being said, if you enjoy Reiki, enjoy it on your own terms. Find a practitioner that fits your style. Someone you feel at home with. There are plenty of Christian Reiki Practitioners out there if that is your thing. There most certainly is someone out there that will suit you. My suggestion is to talk to different practitioners and ask questions. (also you don't have to see a Master to get a treatment, I've met plenty of 2nd degree practitioners just as good) Call around or get recommendations from people.

As for the people who say Reiki is bad; to each his own. Maybe they were badly introduced to it. I have heard so many reactions from "thats phony" to "cool!" No matter what, someone will always have something bad to say. Especially when it comes to some extreme religious folk. Some Christians oppose Harry Potter. Some Christians oppose medical treatments. Then again, some Christians support watching pornography starring married couples. Thats quite a spectrum of tolerance!

Enjoy yourself and Reiki. If you feel it is good, don't let anyone tell you differently. I would highly recommend taking a class in Reiki. It has helped my personal growth so much and it has easily been one of the best things I have ever done in my life.

I've never heard any Christian or Catholic officials, except for the very marginalized extremists that condemn everything, speak of Reiki, Qi Gong, or any other practice as "un-Christian."

And I definitely must concur with docninja on this also;
When it comes to your health and well-being, you must draw a line where your faith ends, and your reason/common sense takes over.

Perhaps this was easier for me being I am spiritual instead of religious.

oldtime: I have to call you on that point. Contraceptives DID exist in Biblical times. For centuries, ancient texts and manuscripts, dating from well before the time of Moses, have been found in Egypt, Greece, Rome, and the Middle East with recipes for contraceptives and abortificants, both internally and externally applied.

Unfortunately, this is one of those things that comes down to belief and faith.... because it's not outlined in the Christian faith if Reiki is good or bad. Any Reiki master probably won't be able to say anything unless they are part of your religion.
My personal suggestion would be to talk to your pastor/priest or bring them to a Reiki session so they can see what it entails.

I empathize with you since I am also Christian and have looked at some alternative medicine practices. I completely disagree with docninja's assessment about the Bible and contraception.... it doesn't talk about it for the same reason it doesn't talk about the Internet... because they didn't exist back then.
One thing I can relate to you (and the reason I gave my suggestion) is because I take a Christian Tae Kwon Do class. Our teacher told us about a father and son 2,000 miles away that were going to test for their black belts soon and invited his pastor to watch for their last test. Their pastor told them after the test that he was rather disturbed because of some of the eastern religious beliefs were being put into practice there (which this man who had been doing this for over 2 years didn't even realize/consider). Needless to say, this concerned him, so he looked online and found our Dojang as one of the only ones that was Christian and decided to fly out this month to take his black belt test.

The point of that story is that there are many times when Christians may take part in things that they don't even realize are against some core Christian beliefs until an objective third party is able to see it. If you are truly concerned about this, talk to your pastor/priest and express your concerns. It may not be blatantly "evil" or "Pagonistic"... but it could open up a foothold that may make it hard for you down the line. Good luck!

Reiki is Japanese in origin. At the time of the formation of Christianity the founders knew nothing of the Far East.

Every human society has had their religions - we are all most likely to follow the one that our parients and forebearers did.

God created everything - all animals, all people and our world. He does not look down on any human religion. We just need to honor his creation and be mindful of our stewardship of each other and the world in which we live.

Reiki healers are dedicated to bringing healing and peace to the world and therefore cannot be "pagan".

This is hilarious. Faith vs. quackery.

As a religious woman who practices energy medicine, I can tell you that my draw to energy medicine, like Reiki, is that it is very biblical. If you look into different modalities of energy medicine you can find Healing Touch Therapy. There is actually a spin off course of Healing Touch Therapy that is spiritually based. Check it out at www.ishahealing.com . The courses are to give a biblical reference to the methods. I can tell you that MY beliefs are that energy medicine is Gods medicine, that he gave us this way to heal our bodies and that it is there for all of us. It is the mainstream medical professionals who seem to be off track spiritually. In fact the word pharmaceutical means 'sorcery' which we know to be biblically evil.
Hope this helps you.

My Reiki Master Teacher, the person who taught me, is a Lutheran who sings in the choir. It doesn't matter about your religion. In fact, I feel that a strong belief in God actually helps the healing session. I mean, Jesus did say in the Bible that we should be able to do all the same miracles that He did here on earth, and even greater miracles after He returned to Heaven. So, why is there doubt? The way I was taught at the Baptist church is that faith cannot be proven. By that standard, neither can Reiki. Does it mean either or both is wrong?

I absolutely love the answer about finding what is right for you. I found that I could do "hands on" healing a couple of years ago - but adding Reiki training to it was the power boost that was needed, evidently. I am definitely a Christian and believe that all good comes from God - otherwise, it would be negative and we wouldn't see the blessings that are bestowed upon people through our bodies. I feel that I am simply a conduit for God and all energy that comes from Him. If that isn't "God-based," I don't know what you'd call it.

You have to do what you feel is right for you. We can't give you "permission," or anything but a basic understanding of our beliefs. Ultimately, you have to make up your own mind. I will offer Reiki to people freely and have maybe 1 out of 10 people take me up on the offer. Out of those people who have a session, 100% feel truly loved and good afterward - and have seen healings. Many will describe it as my taking their pain into me or just feeling very peaceful. Can't beat that for an exchange in any world... what would God find wrong about that? BTW, many rituals in all churches can be found to date back to paganistic times. They were adapted to help bring those old pagans into where the people who were Christians wanted them to be... you can get more flies with honey than with vinegar. And people have a tendency to flock to things that they already understand.
