Oil doesn't mix with water, so no your method isn't going to work. However, you can dilute it in either alcohol or vegetable oil for spraying. In your case, I'd suggest alcohol- which will evaporate and not stain the cloth. It will still leave a slight odor behind for a bit- but then so will the tea tree oil. It won't prevent them all getting through- but it's effective at killing some 93% of adults, and about 80% of the eggs. It's probably a better idea not to mix the hats in a communal bin, or to spray and bag hats individually and then toss in the bin. Then one hat wouldn't contaminate all the others. Personally, I'd rather my child's hat not mix with others- unless it were bagged first. If you are talking about play hats for dressup purposes, your method would be acceptable as long as you didn't have an active case in the class. Even so, I'd be either washing them and baking them dry, or freezing them over the weekend each week.

no it does not work, however, I found out info about homoeopathic remedies. It works better than RID. My daughter got it in middle school, and RID didn't work she had lice for months and the RID basically ate her hair. The remedy had eucalyptus oil, tea tree oil, olive oil,and some other things. Apparently one of the oils actually disintegrates the outside shell of the nits, which protects them. It worked miracles. And her hair ended up being repaired and beautiful. By the way I used it myself because of how my daughters hair felt, looked, and the aroma. My hair is gorgeous. Silky, smells very aromatic but not over powering, and clean. I use it about 2 times a month

Tea tree oil doesnt kill lice but it can prevent them.
It does this by keeping the hair at a cold temperature. Lice are attracted to warm hair, which is why they are spread by children who put their heads together long enough for the hairs to become warm and the lice crawl across. (it is a myth that lice jump)

It is probably best not to put oil with water, as it will make the hair greasy, and it probably wont do very much for keeping the lice away.

You can buy special tea tree shampoo's and sprays from the chemist which are designed to put on children's hair to prevent head lice - they are natural they just go on the hair better.

Like i said, these shampoo's and sprays keep the hair cold to the touch which the lice dont like, so spraying a hat with the oil probably wont do an awful lot.

Hope i helped :)

For some reason, lice hate coconut. Have the kids use coconut shampoo, then rub some tea tree oil on their scalps. I wouldn't have the kids put their hats in the bin with others. Can they put it in a coat pocket or maybe you can put a zipper pull with a clip so they can attach it to their coat?
