Is Reiki nonsense?!

Question: Reiki is a wonderful thing and very effective for a wide variety of conditions. No you do not have to believe in it to benefit from the treatment. It surprises me that people who actually love Reiki are under the misunderstanding that you have to believe in it for it to work. You do not even need to know that you are receiving Reiki for it to work.

There have been double blind studies done, some where the control group of patients had nothing done to them, one group had someone come in and to the motions of Reiki and the third group actually had Reiki done. Compared to the control group the patients who had a person going through the motions had better recovery rates by a percentage equal to normal placebo effect. The group who actually received Reiki had recovery rates significantly higher than the control group and the placebo group.

I personally have treated several people who did not believe in Reiki with great success. I have a coworker who does not believe in Reiki but when she has migraines at work she always comes to me in spite of her disbelief and her migraines have always gone within less than five minutes.

I had a neighbor who did not believe in Reiki but when her blood pressure raised to stroke level (she had a history of strokes) she came to my house and Reiki had her blood pressure back to healthy range before the ambulance could get here.

I have done Reiki on babies too young to know and people who were unconscious, all with great success.

no, its very good, you should try it and then judge for yourself

i personally can't respect or follow anything that wants me to rely on a spirit guide.. to each their own

I have never heard of it and I have heard a lot of nonsense in my life. I seem to be a "nonsense magnet". Therefore there's a good chance that it's not nonsense since I have never heard of it.

Yes, the only good thing is, is that it's relaxing. But anything more than that is myth.

That's a rather negative way to phrase a question.
If you think it's nonsense, obviously it's not going to work for you. If you believe strongly in it, it'll probably work. It depends entirely on your faith.

You don't have to believe in any spiritual guide in order to feel the positive effects of reiki. I used to have a very serious health problem, and reiki healed it eventually. The point is how many people can be as open-minded as they need in order to understand that every sickness comes from bad/blocked energy? Reiki just fills you with energy.

As recently as 700 years ago, it was total nonsense to verbalize that the Earth was round. In fact, people actually were tortured and died because they felt that the Earth was round.

Many people feel that God is nonsense.

People used to believe that magnets were the tools of the devil (about 200 years ago). Crystals were useless pieces of rock and now both items are used in electronic techonology and pharmeceutical medicines (lithium crystals are what the drug lithium is made from!).

All these things used to be considered nonsense.

Check out http://www.reiki.org/ to get a better feel for what Reiki is about. Then, based upon your own (now) educated beliefs, you can make your own decision. Otherwise, you are just following along with others who feel it is nonsense without being informed. Then, find a practioner in your area and experience it for yourself. I'm sure you can get your money back if you were not happy. As a Reiki practioner, I would give someone their money back if they were not happy with the results of their Reiki session. But I have never been asked to do that.

I did Reiki before I even knew what it was or what it would do. I was going to this woman for acupuncture and she asked if I wanted to try Reiki. So I said, sure. It was the craziest experience, in a good way, I'd ever had. Must have moved my chi in some intense way. But it opened me up to a lot of spiritual experiences. And then after, I told her what happened. And she explained that that's what it did. So, it wasn't like I knew about it beforehand and then "made" it happen. If you're interested, try it. Don't listen to the people who haven't tried it. They obviously are not speaking from experience.

(Edit) [Thumbs Down, of course. For me and everyone else that doesn't knee-jerk agree with the "nonsense" viewpoint. (None yet, but hang around and there's BOUND to be someone who will.) Then you can give him "Best Answer" and write a comment about how right you both are. "StudMonkey". Brother. Why don't I open my eyes before going to the trouble to write something I hope is useful? Solipsism, that's what it is.]

Like ANY therapy, much depends on the patient's belief in the therapist's ability to help him or her.

This is just as true with traditional medicine (ask a doctor at St. Jude Hospital for sick children if you don't believe me, or just have a look at their website). Obviously the same applies in psychiatry and psychotherapy -- whatever the approach.

To paraphrase the text 'Alcoholics Anonymous' (incidentally sanctioned by Carl Jung, among other eminent professionals): "The alcoholic, armed with his own history, can often reach another alcoholic in a way that no one else can. Until this rapport is established...little if any progress can be made."

If a deadly and fatal progressive mental and physical disease such as alcoholism can be arrested this way, surely a similar rapport with a Reiki therapist, once established and underlined by progress can be equally effective.

Look at some of the answers above! It is very unfortunate, and so indicative of our time that in the minds of many, "credentials" often outweigh real ability, and even the administration of worthwhile technique. Ignorance is indeed bliss for many -- too bad. Even outside the health field, recognized "expertise" is often nothing more than The Emperor's New Clothes. The CEO of Citbank lost $30Bn last year. Admittedly that took some talent, and real experience. Ditto the results of the rubber-stamp prescription-writers of the mental-health field, so quick to shout 'Witch-Doctor' at anyone who doesn't "earn" his way into their lucrative club by studying their dubious and/or archaic methods.

Of course it is. "Use the force, Luke!" Feel the "force" (aka qi or chi or whatever) heal your imaginary illness!
Reiki is a ridiculous charade between a deluded patient and a dishonest practitioner.
