Why does the smell of Lavender Oil make me feel nauseous, and what could this me!

Question: I am becoming more interested in aromatherapy and reflexology (even started training in reflexology last year until a change in family circumstances dictated I could not finish the course), and am aware of the many and diverse properties of Lavander oil. I want to like it, but the smell of lavender makes me feel really nauseous, and if it is too strong I am sick. I am so sensitive to the smell that I can detect the lavender 'notes' in many modern perfumes and colognes and really cannot use them.

What could be the reason for my response? (sensible answers only please)

if i remember correctly, lavender oil contains something called ketones which can make people with diabetes and possibly other probs(dont know which, sorry)feel ill.-of course it might just be pschological-maybe when you were a baby a terrifying elderly aunt used to kiss you whilst wearing overpowering lavender perfume.ADDENDUM---i found an interesting page which details how lavender oil can rapidly lower blood sugar ,given below

lavender is a very potent oil. When its used in the aromatherapy room at my spa i cat go in because i have a similar reaction - headachey and nauseous.

Its possible you are just very sensitive or mildly allergic to it.

i know what you mean it makes me feel sick too so does vannila and magnolia! so weird lol.

Maybe it's too yang, and you have a yin constitution. No one can use all the essential oils- there will always be some that you just can't stand. Chances are, that means your system has no need of them.

There are always substitutions- can you handle chamomile?

Personally, I hate patchouli and sandalwood.

And modern colognes and perfumes are so full of chemicals, they ALL make me sick. The first floor of Macy's smells just as bad as the fertilizer / pesticide aisle at Home Depot!

I use lavender oil to relax before I am going to bed, and I just add water and is just perfect.

could mean one of 2 things. 1 it is too strong or 2 you are allergic to it. Try cutting the oil with a neutral base oil to make it where it is not so strong.
