I've been really depress lately and my friend told me about oxycontin?!

Question: sorry i'm not sure if that's the correct spelling
but he told me oxycontin works really well
and will get rid of my depression

but i heard it can kill you
if you take too much
is this true?
and how much do you have to take before it can kill you?

should i take it or not?
and is there any other drug i can take
to help my depression?
i also suffer from small cases of bi-polar/mania

and i've already been to therapists and stuff
they don't really work

Speaking from personal experience: St. John's Wort is an herbal supplement that can help alleviate depression. However, you have to be sure you're taking enough. I am taking 1200mg in the morning and another 1200mg at night (most tablets contain 300mg, so that's four pills twice per day). You should also take fish oils (at least enough to get 200mg DHA at a serving) once per day. Any decent supplement store should be able to get show you these.

DO NOT take Oxycontin for depression. It is a narcotic (and addictive) pain reliever that would only make your symptoms worse if you had to go through withdrawal.

You said therapy "didn't work", but didn't give any details. Again from my experience, you may not find relief immediately from therapy, but it does help eventually root out the base cause of your depressive tendencies. For myself, I was unable to truly address any of these underlying issues until AFTER I was taking the St John's Wort. Once the truly "dark" side of depression was alleviated, I was able to do the work I needed to do on the emotions underneath. I hope it can be so for you, too.

Keep trying, there is an answer.

His book is really good, you might give it a try. (Hint: go to the library and check it out there first!)

OMG! never ever talk to that friend again! oxycontin is basically heroin! it is a pain killer used for people in a tremendous amount of pain. like cancer patients. NOT FOR DEPRESSION. Yeah, it can kill you with one pill if you are not used to it. you can stop breathing. and it is the most addictive substance out there. so if you want to become a drug addict who has to go through withdrawls without it, then go ahead and take it. It will for sure RUIN your life. You will be more depressed if you take that crap.

why don't you try eating healthy and exercising. when you exercise your body releases natural endorphines. or try something like wellbutrin if you have to. but go to the doctor and let him prescribe you something. don't just smoke weed or do some crazy pills just b/c your friend says it works for depression. omg

That stuff is for pain relief. They've talked about taking it off the market more than once because of it's addictive qualities. It's not for depression.
My understanding is that weed will actually make you more depressed. I don't smoke it, never have either, but I won't tell you not to. Pills and whatever else don't solve the root problem of your depression. They just aid some of the symptoms with it. There's lots of natural things you can do out there that will help you. Like the person above me said, get out and exercise. Be active, sit in the sun. I got through my depression ok. :) I do not know what it's like to have bi-polar, so I won't try. But, there's lots of online groups that will have some great ideas to help you too.

Here's some advice for you: your friend is NOT a pharmacist, and his advice is NO SUBSTITUTE for that of a doctor or any other healthcare professional.

Oxycontin is not even an antidepressant - your friend is an idiot.

If you want to help your depression through medication and not therapy, start out by getting information from your doctor - he/she actually graduated from medical school.

You really need to keep up with the exercise and making your body healthy, as someone else mentioned, your body releases endorphins which is the most natural drug you can get. Your mind will follow. Surround yourself with good people and good friends. Talk to someone. If you are still in school, reach out to your guidance counselor, seek out a support group - look in your community's local newspaper. Find things that you enjoy doing that are healthy!!!! Sports, music, dancing, reading, knitting.....or any other hobby that will keep you busy. Your mind needs you to be busy. Stay away from the drugs. These won't help and they might make your feelings worse. By all means you need to reach out to someone that you can trust and talk to them about what you are feeling. If one therapist didn't work, try another one. There are so many different kinds of therapy. It may not be something you've ever thought of trying, but try going to an energy healer or someone who reads Tarot....see if they can shed any light. It is an amazing process and you definitely walk away feeling like a different person. Also, most communities have a health line that you can call if you are feeling really depressed and suicidal.

I am so glad you came to all of us, but you need to go to a specialist that can give you something to help you to feel better so that you can work on what is causing the pain inside. Don't give up go to someone who will really listen to you. Just because a person is a therapist does not necessarily make them a good one and there are some that are just better suited for some people and not others., so please don't give up. As far as your friends and your life, you have to be careful of who you associate yourself with. Some people will perpetuate your state of mind and you will be so accustomed to it you will not question the motives of the people around you. You will have to reevauate your life and accept only loving and positive people into it. But you have to first start with loving yourself first. Please stay away from the oxycotin, it is not for depression.
