Question: just like there is in bio fuels for your cars engine.
i know its a daft example.

What? No. Of course not.

Distributing oxygen would be relatively trivial, but taking over its role in the immune system would be nigh on impossible.

No,I don't think so. It just wouldn't taste the same.

I read in a past issue of Nexus Magazine (can't remember which month, but maybe 2 years ago)
that dogs were kept alive for several days when all of their blood was removed and replaced with sea water.
Imagine that.
http://www.nexusmagazine.com/ maybe you can search their database and find the scientist working on this.

They already came out with a blood alternative for transfusion purposes a few years ago.

Search the BBC for it.

yes plasma

i did a project on this in high school and i spent a lot of time when i was little in a hemotoligy lab ( blood lab )

the closet think that they have found was using alligator blood and taking the hemoglobin ( the middle of the red blood cells) out of it. the only problem is that it is toxic to humans by it self. it has about a 100% death rate. you canNOT live on this stuff. it was supposed to be a substitute for blood that did not have a blood type, but it is to toxic to put into use.

i hope that this helps

OOo00o love these questions taht make you think

Yeah. i THINK it could be possible, Because blood transfusions carry risks and because the blood supply is limited, doctors try not to transfuse when possible. In some cases, alternatives to blood product transfusions may be available.
Volume expanders , when a patient has lost a lot of body fluids but does not need red blood cells or other blood cells, volume expanders may be given to prevent or treat shock caused by fluid loss. The most common volume expanders are normal saline (salt water) and lactated Ringer's solution (saline plus additional chemicals). Other volume expanders include albumin, hydroxyethyl starch (HES), dextrans, and purified protein fractions (PPF).

So far, there is no real substitute for human blood. Researchers are working to develop a blood substitute that will not have the risks of blood transfusions. Products that are being tested include hemoglobin-based oxygen carriers and perfluorochemical compounds. They can perform some red blood cell functions, such as carrying oxygen to tissues, but they do not replace human blood.

Most blood substitutes are experimental and are rarely used. They may be used as a temporary measure in patients whose religious beliefs do not allow them to have blood product transfusions. They may also benefit patients with rare blood types whose immune systems would destroy available donated blood. The substitutes may be used until compatible donated blood can be located, which in some cases might take several days.

InTeresting ehh?

I'm hoping tequila will be the answer.
