Is alternative medicine an alternative TO medicine?!

Question: The answers are very good except they leave out that 'alternative medicine' is not covered by medical insurance in most cases. The reason being, it is something that is not PROVEN effective in government research studies, therefore the FDA does not really endorse the alt treatments. You have to be very careful using alt. meds. Take only as directed because just like with 'regular' meds if you take too much it may cause nasty side effects.

No

It can be an alternative and other times it can be a supplement. Depends on the condition and the alternative medicine chosen. Main thing to realise is that most medicine or drugs are to mask the problem where as alternative medicine trys to go to the cause of the problem.

Allopathic medicine is the alternative to natural medicine.

Interesting way to present the question Jared... 'medicine' or 'alternative medicine' implies that one is superior to the other.

In hospitals in China people are treated with 'medicine' and 'TCM' (Traditional Chinese Medicine). Stoke patients receive drugs and acupuncture, with a better recovery rate and improvement.

When picking up prescriptions there are two counters - Prescription Drugs and Prescription Herbs.

Peronsally I believe its Alternative Medicine and Conventional Medicine and one does not preclude the other, they can work very well together.

Alternative medicine is an alternative to conventional medicine.
Alternative treatment is better and at present being preferred over conventional treatment because -It treats diseases which have no cure in conventional treatment, it has less side effects and the cure is more permanent in the sense that there are less incidence of relapses.

I don't agree with the term alternative, it is complementary medicine - it complements the GPs treatment.

I was involved in an accident and had horrid extensive bruises....the hospital said take painkillers...I used arnica cream and the bruises + swelling healed very quickly, the painkillers hardly worked

It is also holistic i.e. treats the person as a whole(body, mind + spirit) not just the symptoms
