Arthritis experience with Glucosamine and chondriotan?!

Question: doctor told me to try this. I did, about 8 years ago. Doc says the stuff available now is more regulated so potency is the same from one company to the next and that it will help with the pain I have. I would appreciate any feed back on this.

The FDA can and does regulate the manufacture of dietary supplements. It does not regulate the sale of dietary supplements.

The Dietary Supplement Health Education Act (DSHEA) was signed On October 25th, 1994. This legislation defines supplements, regulates health claims and labeling of supplements, encourages research and provides for good practice in the manufacture of dietary supplements.

In 2003, the FDA proposed labeling and manufacturing standards for all dietary supplements which are in effect today.Under the cGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practices) proposal, manufacturers would be required to evaluate the identity, purity, quality, strength and composition of their dietary ingredients and dietary supplements.
If you want to make sure that your supplement is manufactured to high standards there are companies that certify these products. The largest is NSF Dietary Supplements Product Certification.

He's right in the fact that they are more closely regulated, but that doesn't mean that every company will have the same doses.... there are some companies that don't use very high quality ingredients. It's best to check with a company you're looking at to verify their quality... they should have a good rating with the USP (U.S. Pharmacopoeia) or GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices), as those are the main quality assurance companies for supplement quality.

That being said, yes, Glucosamine and Chondroitin are both good for joint health, but there are other options available in addition to those. Some of the other popular joint health products are Microlactin, Tart Cherries, MSM, Hyaluronic Acid, Litozin (Danish Rose Hips), and Bromelain.
The only thing to really watch out for is allergies. Glucosamine is typically from Shellfish and Microlactin is from milk. As long as you're not allergic to those, you should have no problem. Good luck!

its not regulated. anyone can put just about anything in a bottle and sell it as a supplement. but most of the products sold in real pharmacies are probably ok, its noname online companies that are usually the most worrisome. chondroiten is almost completely digested and the small amount that isnt digested doesnt get absorbed well, so its probably not really effective. and msm just doesnt work. if you want to save money just go with plain glucosamine, its the only one that really has extensive data suggesting it works

I sure have had good results from taking it!
