How do I tell them...?!

Question: I have so many friends who are going on diets all the time. They are not loosing wait and they are doing unhealthy things to their bodies. My biggest pet peeve is DIET DRINKS! They will end up killing you if you drink too much. Water is always the best liquid to ingest into ones body. So I want some advice from other health-conscious people (especially women) on how to talk to them and get them to realize the mistake they are making.

It's a shame, diets right now are a billion dollar industry. It sickens me everytime i turn on the TV, all i see is diet drink or pill. If you look up online, some of those are very dangerous for you and they've even had certain ones on TV...major lawsuits where people have had heart problems, and even died. That should be a wake up call if there taking some of these products off of the shelf and people are dying from them. Whatever happened to...drinking lots of water and cut your portions in half. That's what i've done and i've already lost 12 pounds. Don't forget to throw in exercise as well. It's like i say...there's no answer in a pill or special drink.
Ya know, you can't tell someone to do something if they don't want too. Look at all of the commercials on TV...they are bombarded with weight-loss gimmicks, drinks..and in the end, who pays for it...the person who is dumb enough to fall for it. These people are making millions and millions of dollars. So, my friend, the only thing you can do (in my opinion), is just make them aware of the dangers. Maybe even find some articles online about the dangers of this stuff.

sticking to regular sodas are much better than diet sodas. it is a proven fact that diet drinks are more likley to cause cancer and it is also a proven fact that diet drinks can actually make a person gain weight.

you can't...people have become so ingrained as to believe what they want...people have to come to their own conclusion about what is correct....take the answers people give on these boards..many are incorrect

I personally would just try and sit down and talk with them about it. I wouldn't go all intervention on them. I would just try and help them out, and make them understand what there getting them selves into.

You should just be there for them and maybe complement them, they may start feeling better about them selves.

The more they diet, the bigger they will get because it will destroy their metabolism. Believe me, I know. I was about average weight and size until I started dieting. I now weigh 300 lbs. It is so harmful.

Hi Lylac,
It's VERY hard to wake someone up while they're trapped in that cycle. From experience, the only way is to introduce them to someone who has already done damage to themselves. Otherwise, your friends very probably will not listen to you. I suggest you look for a local support group for people recovering from eating disorders. There you will find people anxious to help prevent others from making their same mistakes. It's pretty hard to ignore someone emaciated, w/chronic health problems from extreme dieting when they're staring you right in the face. Good Luck.

If you know that your friends really want to drop weight, and you know something that they are doing that is counter-productive, of course, you want to tell them. The main problem is that most people will not listen.
In the case of diet sodas, what you can do is read up on serotonin, which is the feel-good hormone in the brain, which also helps us not want to eat so much. Then, when you know how to say what is good about serotonin, and how it actually helps you lose weight, you can tell your friends about how the artificial sweeteners in diet soda actually block the production of serotonin in the brain. When the serotonin is blocked, people want to eat more, and they can become depressed more easily.
Read up on the artificial sweeteners that you know are in the diet sodas that your friends prefer, so that you can also tell them about other side-effects of drinking diet sodas. Google "artificial sweeteners" and you will come up with a nice list of sites which report how artificial sweeteners can actually cause people to *gain* weight

Silly-Lilly
Pills are for kids!

I tell people all the time how they can improve their health but people are creatures of habit and say things like "oh well I am getting old anyway so what does it matter we are all going to die of something someday."

You can try printing some of this out and handing it out to your friends.
