Vitamin help wanted?!


Question: In the news it stated that a group were given calcium and that more of this group had heart attacks then those on a placebo.

What I am concerned abot is that I take calcium, boron and magnesium in one tablet as I cannot take dairy foods and my diet is limited for other reasons.

Should I be concerned and if so why do doctors still give calcium out on presecription. This is not the source of calcium that I take. G

I cannot add much to what is said above since I agree with the 2 "experts" above both with combining Calcium with Magnesium...in a moderate dose of perhaps 1000 -1500 mg daily (mega vitamins are always a risk) depending on your natural sources of vitamins; and ensuring that you also get sufficient vitamin D3 (at least 400 IU) and Zinc (10 mg) for proper absorption and metabolization.

One important thing not mentioned was that all calciums are NOT created equal, meaning they are not all absorbed equally; and you only benefit from what your body can absorb. Some calcium products, such as in Tums for example, are calcium carbonate and have poor absorption. The best calcium for absorption is Calcium Citrate. The best magnesium for absorption is magnesium malate. AND always look for the amount of ELEMENTAL Calcium or Magnesium...as this represents the absorbal amount as opposed to the total amount you are ingesting. Better quality vitamins/minerals will always show the elemental amount on the label.

And a good rule of thumb is to try and get your vitamins and minerals from natural sources...with supplementation if you have additional needs or cannot guarantee a balanced diet.Good Luck.

apparently, calcium in our bodies contribute to the hardening of plaque in the arteries which in turn cause heart attacks. calcium is needed in our diet for healthy bones, but it should be taken in moderation. and it should be used in conjunction with the proper amounts of magnesium, which helps to regulate calcium in our bodies. since you take magnesium as well as calcium, you may not be at risk especially if you also have a diet that is not high in fats, especially the bad fats.

Only if you already have major heart problems. It will not affect you otherwise.

LIquid vitamins and minerals are better for you.

I've read that study (or at least one very close to it). Basically, that was going by too high of a dose of Calcium without anything to help it's absorption (which is a VERY bad idea).
chattemm is right that too much Calcium is bad for you and could contribute to hardening arteries (which is more or less what happened there), but Magnesium is just one factor that helps the absorption of Calcium. The other things that help the absorption are Boron (which you're taking), Vitamins D and K, Silica, Zinc, Manganese, Ipriflavone, Strontium (in low doses), a few different constituents of Soy, and a number of antioxidants are beneficial as well.

As long as you aren't taking more than 600 mg of Calcium at any given point in time, no more than 1200 mg (or so) of Calcium daily, you aren't taking any prescriptions that would interact with it (including acid blockers), and are taking the Boron and Magnesium that you're taking, you should be perfectly fine. After all, without sufficient Calcium intake, your bones will get rather brittle... it's all about the proper balance.

They purposely do studies to make supplements fail
Make sure you take 100 mg of magnesium for every 200 mg of calcium you take, take the boron, and add vitamin D3
You should be just fine with all those to help the calcium not build up in your organs and joints.

The ones oldtime mentioned are good too but the ones I said are the basic you need to take.

300 mg magnesium to every 600 mg calcium
follow bottle directions on anything else.
Potassium is good too.
