What are some natural ways to regulate my period?!

Question: I asked this in another category the other day and didn't get enough responses, so I am trying it here.

I have irregular periods, that just started being irregular again over the last 6 months (I have had 2 periods in 7 months time).

I am overweight, and working on that, but not exercising so much it should be throwing things off.

Are there any natural ideas to help me?

Before you say - go to a doctor, that's not an option really at this time.

If you can afford to see a naturopath or practitioner in oriental medicine - they will look at the foods you are eating and work out the right foods for you, check for intolerances, blood group preferences etc.

I would then suggest a homeopath as that is my number one choice for all things that need treatment - i have seen a professional homeopath for 10 years and she has sorted out many of the problems i have had based around menstrual problems and depressions. It has worked well for me. I use it on my children and have started my training to become a professional homeopath because i believe in it so much.

There are other options - herbalism, reflexology and shiatsu are the 3 i have some experience of and i like all of them, particularly shiatsu because i see and feel the physical results fairly quickly.

On a basic level from my own experience, changing diet helped a lot with menstrual problems - particularly reducing dairy and meat products - dont know why but it makes a huge difference- hence the suggestion to see a professional in this area first.

I dont think you need to limit yourself to one therapy either, a combination of therapies is often more sucessful.

Black Cohosh, a North American forest plant traditionally used to treat snake bites, is also known as Black Snakeroot. It is reported to be a highly effective herb for treating menopausal hot flashes. Black Cohosh stimulates estrogen-like activity in the body, and should be taken in fairly high doses twice a day for best results. Women undergoing estrogen replacement therapy should consult their doctors prior to supplementing with Black Cohosh.

You have what is termed 'oligomenorrhea'.

There are many practitioner medicines to treat it - I am a medical herbalist; but you need to consult either a naturopath or medical herbalist. It is not that difficult to treat, but there are a number things that need to be assessed.

Never ask a doctor about natural remedies - it just isn't anything to do with their training.

What is your age? My first thought is to use progesterone cream to help your body start ovulating regularly. There's a book called "What your doctor may not have told you about perimenopause". Even if your younger, it's good to read because it will explain about the benefits of progesterone cream and how it can help a majority of female issues. If nothing else, google progesterone cream or go to a website called womentowomen.com . They have a lot of info to help with female concerns.

Herbal remedies known to aid menstrual induction or regulation are as follows:
balm
basil
bay
blue cohosh
caraway
catnip
celery seed
chamomile
cinnamon
elecampane
ephedra
fennel
fenugreek
gentian
ginger
juniper
marjoram
mints
motherwort
myrrh
oregano
papaya
parsley
pennyroyal
rhubarb
rosemary
saffron
sage

As always research to see the amounts that a particular herbal remedy should be taken (i.e. tea, ingested, inhaled, etc). Also check for interactions between any current medications and herbal remedies. If in doubt then avoid a particular herb if you cannot consult with a medical doctor.
