Question: My yoga instructor talks about Ayurveda all the time. I have done some reading on the subject & understand the basic concepts but does anyone here actually follow it and does it work?

I do follow it and make my students adhere to the
principles of their individual metabolism as per ayurveda.
I am a yoga therapist. Ayurveda classifies human being
having 7 constitutions i.e. vata, pitta, kapha, (these 3 are
main ) then there are dual constitutions like vata/pitta,
vata/kapha, pitta/kapha and vata/pitta/kapha combined.
These represent in layman's language as air, bile and
mucous. (vata, pitta and kapha). One who is vata - his/her
metabolism is usually hyper thereby make the person
difficult to put on weight no matter how many calories the
person combines while in kapha metabolism even if he/she
fasts 3 times a week absorb nutrients from atmosphere and
find it very very difficult to shed their weight. Ideal according
to western concept is pitta who have streamlined body but
they are prone to high bp, acidity and pimples on the face.
No constitution is good or bad but maintaining a balance
helps. This is done by eating food which has six tastes i.e.
sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent. I could go
on and on but it is not fair to give so much details. If you really
want a good book on ayurveda i would recommend the book
by Dr. Robert E. Svoboda who is the first american to get
a degree in ayurveda from pune university of maharashtra
state. The book is available with amazon.com and the name
is PRAKRUTI - YOUR AYURVEDIC CONSTITUTION.
Hope this helps. Good luck and God bless. Cheers! :o)
