St. John's Wort is the most effective herbal antidepressant. I'd suggest seeing a therapist.

the best natural antidepressant is exercise. work up to an hour a day. it releases all the endorphins, etc. really helps with depression.

What is the main cause of the depression? That can make a huge difference on the treatment. Here a few tips that greatly help most people.

1. Get the proper nutrition. Lack of vitamins (usually B;s) and minerals from natural sources can cause depression.

*2. The sun. Natural vitamin D comes from the sun. Since the 1600's dr's have recommended daily dosage of the suns rays. Let the sun on your skin some recommend 40-60% of your skin. Just make sure you don't get burned. If you are light skinned 10-20 minutes, dark skin may need up to an hour. Sunscreen prevents the healthy rays so don't use sunscreen, but cover up before burning. Most depressions occur during the winter months.

3. Eliminate sweeteners from your diet including fake zero calorie kind. Avoid all sodas, processed foods, preservatives, MSG, soy, white flour, etc. Food/chemical sensitivities can be a large factor, go natural.

4. Drink water daily, at least 8 glasses worth.

5. Give meditation a try. Stay away from the tv..

6. Keep a journal of your thoughts, fears, worries, etc.

7. Get lots of fresh air. Exercise will also be beneficial, instead of eating when worried or stressed, exercise.

If none of these work within 45 days, go see a counselor/therapist.

Good luck!
