It does cause your blood vessels to dialate( expand) and loose heat! You feel cooler as a result and the alcohol part may make one sleepy and when we wake up we do feel better most of the times!
It works only for symptoms of common cold and fever and has NO effect on the cough!!
It honestly may provide some short-term relief. However, I wouldn't take any alcohol if you're also using any cold medications - can get some nasty effects from combining them.
If you're not taking any cold meds and feel like a drink, go ahead - just remember: "All things in moderation".
