First and foremost, I would suggest seeing a Sleep Specialist if it's a recurring problem. Sleeping pills can be addictive and cause all sorts of problems if they are taken long-term. A Sleep Specialist can find out why you're having trouble sleeping in the first place and can help to correct the problem. Heck, it might be that your Serotonin is too high and the sleeping pills are actually increasing it (which can keep you awake)... that's one reason it's good to check what the cause of the problem is first.

If that's not an option, there are several natural products that can help with sleep. There's Melatonin, Valerian, Chamomile, Hops, L-Tryptophan, L-Theanine, Passionflower, and Scullcap (an herb).
You can try any one of those to help you sleep naturally. Good luck!

I go through periods of weeks where sleep is, well, impossible. Toss and turn.

Unisom is an off-the-shelf aid recommended by a doctor and it works. Start off with a half a one, you won't be so drowsy the next day in the AM. Tolerance will build in about two weeks and they will no longer be effective. If your sleeplessness extends beyond that, you have other problems.

To the abusers: these won't make you high but will make you very sick if you try to overuse them.

A really nice and VERY SAFE "sleeping pill" is a 500 mg table of melatonin.
Take one tablet with water and go straight to bed.... you won't "feel" it kick in. Be sure you can sleep 7-8 hours when you take this.
You can take melatonin every night for two months then take one week off. That's best for your body.
Good luck and sleep well.
