What sparked your interest in Holistic Medicine? Do you remember?!

Question: Ten years ago when my son was 2 and half, he had an ear infection, I, like millions of other parents, took the child to his pediatrician and she prescribed him anti-biotics. One day into taking the medicine, he developed an allergic reaction to the prescription, his whole head swelled up, his little cheeks all lumpy, he had trouble breathing. I took him back to his doctor, what she did was instantly prescribing another medicine, the next day, my son had allergic reaction to the new drug too. On my third trip to the doctor's office within three days, another doctor on shift told me to stop everything, and prescribed steroid, so the swell and rash can ease off.
Once the swell went away, I went to a naturepath, and watched her do 2 ear candles on him. I also bought a bottle of ear drop made with mullen and St. John's wart, his ear problem tapered off without any drugs. I stocked up on ear candles, and mullen oil, and he stopped having ear infection soon after. I soon found out that he was allergic to cow milk, and changed to goat milk for him. His ears never had any more problems.

After the incident, I realized I needed to learn alternative medicine to save my son from ever getting antibiotics again. Within five years I graduated from my naturopathic study. Both my children have had a clean bill of health since then, both haven't taken anti-biotics for the past 11 yrs.

I do emphasize, however, that allopathic medicine ( traditional western medicine) is also necessary at times, my young son broke his left arm riding a skate board two years ago and required plates put in him, he had successful surgery, and made a full recovery in three weeks, thanks to the surgeon who performed a flawless operation. No herbs or poultice could have done a better job to straighten his broken bones.

Therefore it is important to have both allopathic medicine and alternative medicine hand in hand. But the principle should be " do no harm", and the goal should always be from a "saving life" point of approach. During the operation, his surgeon and I discussed whether it is necessary to prescribe antibiotics during recovery period, since surgeons routinely prescribe them after an operation. I expressed my view against it, the surgeon who is an African American from Harvard Med, took my opinion in, and decided to give antibiotic a pass unless there is a reaction or infection. I must say I respected him a great deal from his well thought out decision.

Immediately after the operation, I started giving my boy a homeopathic remedy for bone recovery every three hours, he stopped asking for pain pills at the end of the first day. He could get back on piano and saxophone on day 15.

Cancer.

Someone can have a disease and sometimes you can no longer treat the disease, you can only treat the person.

I got interested in alternative medicine when I could see that man made drugs had allot of side effects. Many where not curing and in some cases making people sicker.
I have studied alternative medicine for 15yrs now and I'm still learning. New studies are teaching us more all the time.

20 years ago when my doctor told me I would never walk without a cane. I knew there had to be something that could 'fix' me. I started learning about holistic and never looked back!
BTW.. I haven't used a cane in 15 years.

well sometimes the pills just dont work.. and there are so many interesting herbs and as a kid i just wanted to learn all about them.

Depression and my son's ADHD.

I really got into the cleansing using oxy powder. then when i saw the results i was getting was working better than the prescriptions i was taking for depression. I was hooked and have been a firm believer in alternative medicine since then.

I so agree with Gadfly!

I also started learning about alternative health methods over 20 years ago when the medical doctors diagnosed my daughter with an "incurable" autoimmune disease. I have learned 6 or 7 different methods, including homeopathy and hypnotherapy. I have become a practitioner of alternative health methods and I use all I have learned.

I also agree that we need school medicine in some cases. If I was diagnosed with appendicitis or was in a car accident, I'd gladly go to a hospital. But I would use my own methods for my recovery.

All the best!
