Has anyone ever taken melatonin and 5-htp together?!

Question: If so, what were the side effects, if any? How did it work for you?

Actually, 5-HTP has no Melatonin in it. Both Melatonin and 5-HTP support Serotonin, so if you take both together, you might get too much Serotonin.... and ironically, that would actually wake you up more than anything. Serotonin helps to control both your sleeping and your waking cycles, so you don't want to push the balance too far one way or the other.

The only time that you would want to try two different products (in sufficient doses) that both help with Serotonin would be if a doctor tells you to take both. Just remember, too much of a good thing can be a bad thing ;-)

I have taken 5-htp, but not reguarly.
But i know it contains melatonin, so you don't need to take extra melatonin.

It is never good to mix products, and that includes "natural" products.

In the case you mention, depending on the dosage, the side effects could be disastrous. Too much Serotonin - called serotonin syndrome - is a toxic reaction which requires immediate medical attention. Symptoms may include anxiety, restlessness, confusion, weakness, tremor, muscle twitching or spasms, high fever, profuse sweating and rapid heartbeat. Elderly individuals are more at risk.

Never mix natural products between themselves, nor with medicines, not even with simple vitamins, without informing yourself first.

I have two enormous "bibles" on "Drug-Herb-Vitamin" interaction and I use them all the time!

You were wise to ask!
Wishing you good health!

I take both. 5-HTP 200 mg and Melatonin .5 mg at night, and the combination benefits my sleep significantly. I have no adverse effects from these doses. I know of no reports of this combination being dangerous. Taking this combination falls within the the treatment guidelines specified by Dr. Jacob Teitelbaum, a top sleep and fatigue specialist.

5-HTP supports BOTH serotonin production AND melatonin production. That doesn't mean that 5-HTP is necessarily a substitute for taking melatonin, though.

Generally speaking, mixing supplements which contain doses of chemicals your body makes naturally is safer than mixing drugs. This is an empirical observation, not a religious belief in the "power of nature".

Most doctors, unfortunately, know very little about drug or supplement interactions. The latter in particular.
