If a supplement has 500mg of elemental Magnesium how much does your body absorb?!

Question: This is why people get so confused, because we get magesium from our foods not supplements.

However, in answer to your question, Magnesium will leach Calcium out of your bones in order for your digestion to metabolize it, so Magnesium alone is not a good idea.

You have to take 1 part magnesium to 2 parts calcium, and vitamin C to assist in the absorption of the calcium as well... Even that is no guarantee of a greater absorption of 15% because they are synthetics! - This is what most poeple don't know!

Now, to stop being a synthetic chemist with synthetic vitamins that make no sense to your body, your best bet is food form.

Coral Calcium has all of these synergistic properties and is close, and available at health food stores, but you want one that is standardized and regulated for efficacy.

Also, soft drinks leach calcium right out of your body. Why? It strips the vitamin C out of your body and thereby stopping the synergistic affect of absorbing calcium and your bones and teeth become weaker. Stop trying to quench your kids thirst with a coke. Get them WATER. Cokes should be considered a treat like a candy!

In order to learn the difference between absorption of food based vitamin/mineral properties bound by phytochemicals, such as the whole plant and avoid synthetics that make no sense to your body, take a look at this google educational video: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=...

Very little. To absorb magnesium you should take it in a salt form - chloride for example. In its elemental form (just like iron supplements) it is not easily absorbed by the body.

Have a nice day!

To anyone else that misunderstands your question, the amount of Elemental Magnesium in a product is just specifying how much Magnesium is in the product as opposed to the total Magnesium Citrate (Oxide, Aspartate, or whatever other molecule it's bonded to). No company sells Elemental Magnesium on it's own because it wouldn't be absorbed by the body very well.

To answer your question, it entirely depends on how much your body can absorb. Some people can only absorb a couple hundred mg at a time, some can absorb well over 4-500 mg. You could ask your doctor if they can test you to find out, but that's the only way to find out for sure.
However, most people have no trouble absorbing 400 mg at a time. Good luck!

To add to these answers. If you are seriously deficient of Magnesium your body wont absorb as much at first. But keep taking 500mg and in about 6mos or so you will be able to absorb more. Sounds strange but that is what the studies have found.
If you are having a runny stool, then you need to back off to 300mg. God Bless

Your body always absorbs less magnesium than what the supplement contains. How much less who knows.

The best magnesium supplements are organic magnesium such as magnesium amino acid chelates, magnesium orotate and magnesium gluconate as they are much better absorbed than inorganic magnesium such as magnesium oxide and magnesium sulphate.
