Swedish Massage is just a basic form of massage that is taught in most massage schools.
It is highly therapeutic and relaxing to the body and mind. They massage the muscles of the body to try to get them to relax!

Most massage therapists start out doing swedish massage but usually add other things to their bag of techniques.

The best thing to do is to call whoever is going to be doing the massage to find out what they really do and what you can expect or find their website.

Sounds like you may not have ever had a massage. Don't worry. You have complete control over what will happen in the massage and can say stop that doesn't feel good or yes that does feel good.

Based on my experience Swedish massage makes use of effleurage, or stroking with the open palms and very moderate pressure. I prefer the combined Swedish-shiatsu because the latter type addresses important points in our bodies to align the energy channels.

Swedish massage uses a comparatively ligth touch as compared to other massage forms. The strokes are usually long with light to medium pressure. I'd go for it as it's free and they can be very relaxing. As for what they do, you will most likely lay on a massage table and the therapist will cover you with a sheet or light blanket. They should only "expose" the part of the body they are working on, generally the back, legs, arms. Most therapists play relaxing music during the massage. If you allow yourself to just go with the experience you should enjoy it! (dont' expect super tense or knotty areas to be worked out with this type of massage)

A swedish massage is a deeply relaxing type of massage. It is meant to ease tension and stress, improving overall well being. Don't expect your therapist to get out all your 'knots', that's not what this type is designed to do. If you have an area that is bothering you (knots), discuss it with your therapist, depending on spa policy, he/she may be able to work it out for you. If you're worried or nervous about anything just ask, most therapists are more than willing to answer your questions to put you more at ease. Just take a deep breath and enjoy.
