Hi Eileen,

Has your friend tried any herbal remedies? There are a lot of herbs that help with insomnia, and they benefit you in a lot of other ways also. Herbs are synergestic, which means that they can help with something like indigestion but actually help the whole body function better, which in turn may lead to a better night's sleep. So taking, one herb for sleeplessness may healp you with arthritis or high bloodpressure, etc.!

I'll give you an example of a few that help with sleep problems:
Black cohosh - is very relaxing (to be taken in small doses ony).
Chamomile - brewed in tea at bedtime can be very helpful
Kava Kava - meant for short term use is quite relaxing
Peppermint - soothes digestion and promotes relaxing when used as a tea

You will need to read cautions carefully when using herbs to avoid problems, but if cost is an issue, they are easy to grow yourself and then you can have the health benefits from them as well as having tastier meals!

The oldest remedy that i know of is cutting a onion maybe in four pieces and putting them in a jar with a tide lid and then open up the jar and smell the onion before going to bed this remedy somehow has a relaxing effect also it tends to stimulate blood circulation to you re brain .But the most potent is melatonin 1 mg or Les and by combining it with a little hawthorn tends to lower blood pressure a little you can say calms a worry heat .

Melatonin is readily available at most pharmacies, grocery stores, and natural foods stores. Typically taking a 1mg tablet (or you could even break it in half, 0.5mg) is enough to help you go to sleep and help you stay asleep during the night, without feeling groggy in the morning.

Melatonin is a neurohormone secreted by the pineal gland in your brain, and is what your body uses to make you feel sleepy. Its release is triggered in accordance with circadian rhythm, secreted when it starts to get dark out, and secretion is suppressed when it gets light out in the morning, encouraging you to awaken.

Taking melatonin in tablet form is effective because the neurohormone itself efficiently crosses the blood-brain barrier. Some studies link melatonin supplements with increased REM sleep periods. REM sleep is the most beneficial part of sleep- lack of REM sleep leaves the waker feeling unrested.

Melatonin is not a synthetic drug. It is the same neurohoromone found and secreted by your body on a daily basis. It is safe to take over a long term period. And it costs literally $4 or $5 for 100+ tablets in most cases.
