Healing others by touch...?!

Question: I can heal other peoples sickness/diseases by touching them with my hands, but I just can never heal my own...A reiki instructor once told me that this was common and with training I can also heal myself but I can't get such training for my own personal reasons/problems. So I was wondering if there were any other ways to develop my ki to actually help myself and not others since it doesn't do any good for me helping others... By the way, can I make this like a job so I actually get paid for what I am doing? If so, how?

I have to disagree with the Answer Fairy on this one.

I too am a level four Reiki practitioner but it was an ability to heal that led me to reiki not the other way round, like you I could heal others but not myself, untill I was attuned to Reiki.

Being healthy is about being free of dis-ease so I suggest that is the route you take to health; mentally, physically and spiritually.

We all know how to look after our bodies with diet and exercise so start learning how to train your mind ( try NLP)and find a spiritual path that fits to start you on your journey. Meditation is a good place to start and there are many resources on the web that can help you find out about chakra's, developing Ki etc.

There is nothing wrong in considering payment for any healing that you do. The exchange of money for goods or services is simply an exchange of energy which should correlate to the value that both parties agree. It doesn't have to be money; it could be mowing the lawn or cooking a meal as an exchange. During Reiki treatments it is not the Reiki energy that is paid for but the time and overheads of the practitioner.

Before you start charging you will have to build up a reputation for the healing that you do and 'market' your services just like any other business. As a Reiki Instructor I am still bound by the business conventions of the day and have to have insurance and pay taxes etc.

I wish you all the best.

My mother is a fourth level reiki. You're right, you aren't supposed to be able to heal yourself. It's not about that. It's about deep spirituality and putting good energy out into the world. By trying to keep it in (healing yourself) you are upsetting the natural balance of the universe. You are also losing the significance of giving to receive. You must give in order to receive. By being selfish and thinking about healing yourself and making money, you are disrupting your kharma. What you need to do is make friends with another reiki. Learning to ask for help and learning to receive is a big part of spiritual growth.

Sounds to me like you have a lot to learn. Then again, who doesn't?

First of all...no you can't. If you really think you can magically heal people by manipulating invisible energy fields, then maybe you would like to offer some proof. FYI...someone saying they were "sick" and you "healed" them doesn't count as proof. You may consider applying for James Randi's Million dollar prize for proof of paranormal powers, but only one reiki person tried, and they failed miserably to demonstrate any magical powers under controlled conditions.

Reiki and Therapeutic Touch are 2 of the more common "energy" treatments in Alt Med world.

Both are based largely on the completely unproven notion of a "life force/energy" which in different traditions is known as chi, qi, ki or prana. It supposedly travels down "meridians" in your body, and can be accessed/blocked at key points known as "chakras" Practitioners claim that alterations in this "energy" can affect health, that they can detect these changes, and by waving their hands around, can unblock their chi/ki/qi/prana and improve health.

Unfortunately, there is not a single shred of evidence for chi, meridians or chakras. They are completely undetectable by science. There is also no evidence that practitioners can actually detect the fields....they do about as well in controlled studies as dowsers do when their abilities are tested...which is to say, no better than random chance. It should be noted, that all the above is assumed to be true by practitioners...none of them actually bothered to study it or prove it.

So...even though it is implausible, and scientifically not proven...can they affect health? Again, repeated controlled trials have not shown any correlation, and any positive effects are similar to that of placebos, for which we do have a sound scientific understanding.

I've always been very underwhelmed by the sorts of claims energy healers make....at best, they claim people "feel better" and are "more relaxed". Great....so does petting my dog.

So....it is implausible, unproven, and it doesn't actually work.

Next time you have your heart attack, break a leg, or get diagnosed with cancer....who are you going to see....a magic self proclaimed energy healer or an actual doctor.??
