Should i suggest using ear candles?!

Question: Ok, my right ear feels clogged, and I was hearing about ear candles and the "magic" they work. Where can I buy them? MedFast? Will my ear sound good as new?

Several years ago I bought ear candles from Whole Foods (An organic grocery store). There were a dozen or so in the bag so I invited a friend over who had severe allergies to try them on him. He wasn't too keen on having a fire lit at the end of his ear, but I have to tell you that it was a fun night. We freaked out my brother who came over for a visit. There was my friend, lying on the sofa, with a burning object hanging from his ear! We all got a few laughs out of it that night. I stopped using them when I noticed my hearing was a little off plus heard buzzing sounds..zzzz and no, there weren't any bees buzzing around me! LOL If you try them, have a friend nearby and lay a towel over your shoulders to catch the ashes!! They work, just bee careful.

Bad idea.

i love these. they work like a charm in cleaning out your ear. and yes you will hear better if it is the wax causing the hearing problem. if you don't experience better hearing after use then see and ear doctor asap.

well, i have never heard of ear candles, but you can make a funnel out of newspaper, put the small end in your ear and light the other end on fire. Obviously you wouldn't want to do this by yourself. It does help though. Someone told me that making a funnel and blowing cigarette smoke in your ear helps as well.

Better yet, go to the pharmacy dept. in your local store and purchase a bottle of "Sweet Oil". Also buy a bag of cotton balls.
Go home and pour a little bit into a teaspoon. Heat the oil over a candle and then when it's warm, put the cotton ball into the "sweet oil" and then put it in your ear.
Place a towel on your pillow and go to bed. In the morning remove the cotton ball and wipe your ear out with a q-tip.

My grandmother used to do this with us kids, and I've done it with my kids and grandkids. It works better than a bottle of Debrox.

When I was a chiropractic student I wondered th same thing, so we set up a fairly simple experiment with me as the subject. First I had a couple fellow students look into my cerumen (ear wax) filled canals, then followed the instructions included with the ear candles.

We burned one in my ear according to the directions, and one in a fire-proof area in another room down to the same length. We then opened each and looked for residue, and again examined the inside of my ear.

The results of this N=1 experiment were that both candles had the same ear wax resembling residue in the tube and my ear had the same amout of wax inside.

Bottom line, I don't think ear candles work.

The best ways I've found to control wax are:
1. one or two drops of olive oil to make the wax more pliable.
2. place your ear next to the shower head and let the water clean out the canal.

Always remember, never stick anything in your ear larger than your elbow. Q-tips only impact the wax.

If that doesn't work, just go somewhere that has an irrigation unit, nothing cleans ears out better than simple irrigation.

You might also consider that you have a problem with the drainage from your middle ear, not with waxy buildup in your ear canal. Oftentimes, I'll adjust the ears, and the upper cervical spine and this will resolve the feelings of fullness by allowng the eustachian tubes to open.

Personally, I absolutely love ear candles and use them at least 3 or 4 times a year to get wax out. However, you need someone that knows how to use them properly to show you because they can be dangerous if improperly used.

The funniest thing about ear candles is that some gullible people actually believe that they work!

Ear candles are a hoax. They don't remove wax from your ears and they are potentially dangerous.
Another one of the many altmed gullibility taxes.

I had an ear that was very impacted with wax. The nurse told me she would clean it out at my next appt., but I had a friend candle it instead. It took three candles, but my ear was better. When the nurse looked in my ear again, the wax was gone, so apparently they do work if you use them correctly. It really only works if you are lying on your side and you must use more then one candle per session. They are available at health food stores, but you need someone to help you do it. Some salons and spas offer this treatment. Try the yellow pages.
