Any good effective natural home remedies for a really bad cough ?!

Question: I've had this cough with flu for three days and nights now, I can't sleep, can't eat. I'd rather just let it run it's course rather than go to the doctor. I've tried fresh lemon juice and honey, didn't help. Any suggestions ? Me and my partner need some sleep !

Hi
I see that many have already written to you in an effort to assist you in getting some much needed rest.

My grandmother swears by hot toddies and mustard packs.
Both my mother and I do not like the taste of the toddies so we do what a ND reccommended, hot water, apple cider vinegar, and honey. In one 6 ounce cup of hot water, I add about a tablespoon of honey and a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar. The vinegar helps to open airways and is a good cleaner upper. The honey is a natural anticeptic (sp?) and works to calm the cough. It is safe and can be sipped all through the day. On top of that - half a cup of water combined with half a cup of apple cider vinegar can be heated to a boil so that you can breathe in the steam. It is touted by an overseas missionary nurse, to be better than our stateside albuterol nebulizers. (sit at a table and get comfortable. then drape a towel or two over your head and neck along with the cup of hot hot cider water and breathe --- be aware that you might just cough and hack up crud that you never knew you had in you - but when that is done you will be able to breathe so much easier.))

I might suggest this in combination with some over the counter guiafenasin (the stuff in Mucinex) - get something like 1200 mg combined with dextromethorrphan - the guiafenasin helps with the congestion and the dextroM helps calm the cough. ---it might help for those difficult hours of the late afternoon, through the night to see you through to the morning.

Another family friend says that if you wash your feet then slather a thick coat of vicks or metholated rub on the soles of your feet - you can help your lungs free up crud and breathe easier ---- remember to put warm socks on afterwards and when you step into the tub/shower the next day, BECAREFUL - the petrol base makes things very slippery --- we always place a rag down on the base of the tub so that we dont slip around...

I've heard peppermint oil - breathing it as well as lavender and clarey sage can also help in opening passage ways.
I might suggest that you call your local Super Supplements, Food Coop, Whole Foods store, or ND to inquire on other options.

Do you have nasal congestion? My regular doc has had me try rinsing my sinsus' with a combination of 8 ounces warm water, 1/4 tsp salt, and 1/8 tsp baking soda. Not sure how it is supposed to work and I am not sure it really does in my case - but I have heard many others say that it really helps.

I know the docs here prescribe a robitussin cough syrup with codine in it - i can honestly say it tastes crappy and doesnt work for me. But codine is a smooth muscle relaxant (?) and therefore supresses the cough mechanism. I think the dosage must depend on the individual as if my mom takes any medication just the smallest amount works but for my sister she has to take some things in double doses just to get the same effect (similar size and weight).

If you are really really fed up - I urge you to see your doctor ---but he or she can really help . But if you have a few days before loosing all hope, try the applecider vinegar (really doesnt taste bad and you can add less or more to taste) drink WITH the Guiafenasin/Dextromorphan.

That should give you a chance to catch up on your sleep.

Kitchen remedy is to slice an onion into a deep bowl and cover in honey, letting stand overnight. The next morning, strain the mixture of juice and honey and take one teaspoon four or five times a day.

cough syrup

If you have any whiskey at home then put a some not too much though in hot water and drink it.
Works just as well with Dark rum, plus it helps sweat the flu out
works every time for me.

When you go to sleep try to nudge yourself upright a little so the mucus don't come up and irritate the throat.

Also, you can try breathing in some steam to lossen up the mucus a little, boil some water, pour it into a bowl, then use a towel to cover your head and lean over the owl of hot water.

Hope you get well soon!

Speak to your local chemist. Will sort you out quick.

Good Luck

Good old vit C and Plenty of rest!

A teaspoonful of honey has been shown to be just as effective as cough syrup at reducing coughing symptoms. If you don't like straight honey, mix some in with herbal tea and drink all day long as symptoms persist.

Also, another good one is Vicks Vapo Rub on the feet at night. I thought it was a load of crap until I tried it, and it worked. Rub vicks all over your feet and then put socks on right before bed. Somehow, it makes you stop coughing.

green tea and lots of honey, you need to make sure your throat stays lubricated.
