Alfalfa sprouts, can you grow them in soil?!

Question: I was given a pack of alfalfa seeds, but I don't have a sprouting jar nor any muslin, but i have soil.

can you sprout them in gardening soil and in a tub like you can do with cress?

you can also use cotton wool soaked in water.

I don't think soil would be very good because the sprouts would get all dirty. If you do them in a jar they are clean. You could ask a sweet shop for a jar or you could probably get a cheap one from somewhere like Wilkinsons. I think they sell glass jars for biscuits.

I had the best sandwich I have ever had at Covent Garden a few years ago. It was big door steps of wholemeal bread with butter, cheese and alfalfa sprouts on it.

No I do not think that is a good idea.
