If you have the hiccups eat peanut butter it works like a charm! You theory is a good one but I think the hiccups would be gone before the potassium from the banana was absorbed and started to work.

The reason bananas help with muscle spasms and cramps is because of the potassium. Hiccups are usually caused from indigestion or nervousness, so it most likely won't work for hiccups. The best thing I have found for hiccups is to relax and to apply slight pressure with the finger tips to the solar plexus.

The sure short way to treat hiccups is ...... Swallow 1 tsp of sugar to get quick relief from hiccups.

Hiccups are actually an action the body takes to protect itself. The diaphragm almost always works perfectly. When you inhale, it pulls down to help pull air into the lungs. When you exhale, it pushes up to help push air out of the lungs. But sometimes the diaphragm becomes irritated. When this happens, it pulls down in a jerky way, which makes you suck air into your throat suddenly. When the air rushing in hits your voice box, you're left with a big hiccup.
