An inexpensive cure is the suffocation method. Use any kind of conditioner, put lots on the child's head, leave it there for an hour, then wash and comb out the hair thoroughly. Repeat weekly.

An inexpensive prevention is to put a small amount of tea tree oil in a spray bottle (about 10mls in a litre of water) and spray the kids' heads before they go to school. Make sure their hair (if long) is tied back firmly and preferably in a bun - long, loose hair brushes against other kids and transfers lice.

You don't need to wash the whole house, only soft furnishings, clothes and hair items their heads have touched in the last hour.

I know this sounds crazy but when my daughter was in grade school there were a couple of epidemics of head lice in her school and my daughter did not get it....her teacher asked me what my secret was and I honestly did not know, in speaking to her I came to the conclusion that the "baby cologne" that I was putting on her hair everyday prevented her from getting lice..I am assuming it's the high alcohol content in the product....here is a link to the stuff I would buy for her, they might have it in your area;

I am assuming though that any baby cologne will work, just douse your children's hair with the cologne solution, style as usual and voila, no more bugs!...best of luck to you I hope this works...

Apply Neem oil on the hair and leave it in the hair for two hours before washing. The treatment should be repeated every day for a fortnight. The lice infection is resolved in a fortnight.

I fought with my daughter having lice for about six months, and after searching the internet and cleaning like i was suppose to, i got this stuff at walmart and its a safe lice medicine, you leave it on for an hour with something covering her head while you clean everything again. Its not the regular lice medicine like nix or the other ones they have, this one is really safe to use. I cant remember what the name is but you can ask the pharmasist or just go to where they have the lice medicine and look for it, it will say it on the box, that it is safe to use with no harsh chemicals.

Good luck I know what a pain it is to try and get rid of it
